Need a new pair of headphones

Hi,

So my current pair are dieing (PX21s from Turtle Beach) and seeing as I no longer use my PS3 for gaming all that much I no longer need a pair of headphones that is compatible with both devices. I'm looking to purchase a new pair that have the following qualities (if possible) and stay within my budget of ~£100.

Light weight for long gaming sessions
Durable
Big enough to go over my head / ears
Portable (to use with my iPod etc.)

After reading here most people tend to suggest getting a pair of headphones and a standalone mic which I imagine is the way I want to go if you get far superior sound and don't sacrifice too much in the way of a good mic.

So, does anyone have any suggestions?

there's so many good options, why don't you look at the many threads which have been posted recently asking the exact same thing?

HTF 600 - £27 through flu bit

CAL 1 - £50
CAL 2 - £70

HD 595 second hand - £65

SE-A1000 - £75

as for mics, go for the clip on mic from DX for £1.56, it's a brilliant mic, ignore the fact it costs less than £2, you could easily sell it for £10 on amazon

I've had the DX mic for about a year now. Its excellent for the price, but I really wouldn't say its brilliant - its on a par with the Speedlink SPES but its far from high quality.

As per Sonny, check out one of the other 12+ recent threads asking the same question, and have a look at head-fi.

Soundstage, sound signature, genre preference, open/closed are also very helpful! :) I presume you also dont have a standalone DAC/amp, but do you have a soundcard?

I've got onboard from my mobo but no physical sound card, I've never really been in the market for a pair that require one as the standard mobo suited me fine. Plus all my recent headsets have had USB connection as opposed to double 3.5mm jack. I'll check out some of the other threads and report back.

HTF600 is out of stock on amazon now, maybe forever, glad I got mine when I did.

Some people trying to sell theirs for like £74 now lol.

Just ordered that sound card, thanks for the heads up I had been contemplating the OEM version for a while but retail for cheaper is a no brainer.

The panasonic htf600 are not that great (£27 they are) they are being overhyped slightly I own a pair and I did a direct a/b they are missing vast details in music they are a straight out V signature sound albeit a nice clean crisp punch and are held together with glue.Mine shattered in to pieces just putting them on my head after 2 months no stress no strain oh and one side stopped working too they are just built very cheap hence the price but believe me they are not "reference" lots of detail missing compared to other headphones I have.At £30 or below no complaints but don't pay much over £30 for them.

For £27 I'd rather get the Philips SHL3300 £26 now http://www.head-fi.org/t/697813/review-philips-shl3300-dj-headphones-most-underrated-headphone or a set of Superlux HD-681 EVO or fischer audio 004v2 which come in oem variants(beta brainwavz HM3, maxell retro all the same thing) for even cheaper prices are rebadged fischer audio 004v2 and they are scarily cheap.

For £100 the best you'll get are the akg k550 or audio technica m-50 or the beyer dynamic dt770 can float around £115 worth stretching to but none of these apart from the m-50 would be good as portables. The fact you want around the ear doesn't really fit in to the portable market most of them are sit on ears.

To me the maxell retro rebadged fischer audio 004v2 are an atg bargain when you consider can grab them for not much more than a tenner.
I'd be tempted to buy a maxell retro for portable and another for home.

Sorry to hi-jack.

I am looking to get some headphones for gaming, was looking at gaming headsets but since reading how god awful they are, I think I am going to just get a half decent pair of headphones and use a clip on mic.

Out of those 3 which would you advise best for gaming?

Would you say the Creative Aurvana Live2 are worth the extra wonger?

I like the idea of not having just the one cable and not getting tangled in my ridiculously long Steelseries Siberia V1 clip on mic.

Only if your then going to spend £30 or however much it is to import a V Moda Boom Pro Mic.

It's a mic which is built into the cable but you then may need to spend <£10 on a trss y splitter also like this one http://www.astrogaming.co.uk/pc-headset-y-adapter/3ACBL-HBM9U-760.html

depends on what the end of the v moda boom pro mic looks like

What would you look at for home / gaming use if I decided to go down that route? Are the DT770s worth pushing that few extra £££ for?

The DT770 are excellent phones out of my collection I would never part with it. The K550 was too lean, average soundstage for gaming IMO. The 770 have one the biggest soundstage out of all the closed headphones.

It also is much fuller sounding with epic bass. It's more comfortable with deeper cups. It's worth it. The only thing I'd pick the K550 is if you want to hear a bit more detail but you sacrifice too much IMO especially enjoyment.

Also look into

Denon D600 used there's one on gumtree for 75!! These would be my first choice.

I'm looking at the Sennheiser HD 598s and my only problem is the colour, I've been unable to find a black version of them. Does anyone know if it is made?
