Hi Guys,

Insurance renewal time again, my current insurers (SKY Insurance, underwritten by Chaucer) want an additional £20 per month out of me for no apparent reason (I haven't called them to find out why yet). I have 5 years NCB and never had an accident or claim.

Just wondering if you chaps might know of a decent insurer for modified cars, or in my case an '04 1.8 Toyota Celica VVTLi TSport. Has full body kit & alloys. Has a few engine & component mods but nothing worth mentioning.

Thanks in advance :)

I'm with Greenlight, as they were about 10% cheaper than Sky for me on a lightly modified Clio 182

Ok thanks, will give them a call

You're already with the broker I would have suggested..

Yeah I have been with Sky for 2 years as they have been the cheapest, and recommended. Perhaps I will call them up posing as a new customer to see what the quote comes out at.

If this is just your renewal letter that has come out they ALWAYS ask for more, thats a renewal for the lazy :p

For my renewals I always got a considerably cheaper quote by calling them

I'd try GreenLight but they were pretty rubish for me this year, £120 more than Sky and wouldn't budge on the price at all which is a let down considering all the hype about them :(

I've never had any luck with any of the specialist insurers really. Flux have always been expensive, Greenlight premiums went up massively by adding on my GF -Sky have been the closest to getting my money but usually only by price matching another quote...at which point i'll just go with the alternative as they offered the price first.

Yeah try Greenlight, Prestige and Adrian Flux. If you're not already a member try signing up to a Celica owner's club/forum, you'll often get a small discount with insurers.

Or just call and ask them to see if there's anything they can do, generally the renewal quote sent to you won't always be the cheapest they can do :)

Ok guys, I had alook on the Celica Club who all recommend Sky, Adrian Flux or Greenlight.

My Sky renewal was at £635
Adrian flux came back with £530
Greenlight have yet to call back
Called Sky and changed a few bits (mileage and car value) premium came in at £515 :D

On finance works out £3 cheaper than last year so can't complain. I have gone ahead with that, if Greenlight can magically come back with something lower I might consider it.

Cheers for all the input, I am happy with Sky again and this will be my 3rd year running with them - which I think proves them as decent insurers because they clearly want to keep their customers. Perhaps they should have called me rather than send a letter with a more expensive policy though...

+1 to call them up as there's always haggle room. insurance went up by £80 (or something) with admiral I think, haggled on phone quoting some compare the market prices... boom, got it £30 cheaper than the previous year ;)

also yeah try and just lump sum it if you can :D

dont pay your insurance monthly then. whack it on a credit card and pay that off monthly instead.

Good point I could do this. I have worked out the APR of the finance from Sky at 18.5%. I could whack it on my Virgin CC, balance transfer at 0% interest to my Barclaycard (2.9% fee - £15) then pay that off monthly. Would work out £7 cheaper per month than using Sky's finance.

I would do it that way because the APR of purchases on my credit cards are both around 14%

not sure if serious :p

though I was reading on the audi forums (I think) someone was with admiral and when they came to declare the mods they were adding onto their car they were just charge like a flat rate of £10 per mod (based on yearly payment not £10 a month extra per...)

not sure how much truth there is behind it as I think It was posted a year or so ago. might be worth checking though? :p or can anyone say either way with experience with mods and admiral?

I was playing about the other day with insurance and mods just see the prices. From what I remember a 5-10% remap only went up about £10-20

Very serious. I ran a modded MR2 Turbo import and admiral were by FAR and I mean seriously cheaper than most places.

Sounds like all he will be declaring is the bodykit. it cannot hurt to give them a call.

sky for me with that car was £300.. i pay 250 on the GT but i do pay it all at once.

Blimey £300 is good - dunno why mine is £200 more. I've limited the value and mileage to minimum. Anyway I paid up front so saved £100 by not doing finance. Works out £40 per month
