Moving jobs as a contractor - is the grass always greener?

Wouldn't say you are suffering from 'grass in greener on the other side'. You're clearly unhappy for good reasons so looking for other opportunities makes perfect sense.

More money, and one of the benefits of being a contractor is if you're aren't happy, you up sticks and go. No need to get involved in the office politics which sounds like what's happening with you now.

I know you haven't mentioned it on here but I think you should look for a contract on more modern software/equipment.
The place won't have moved on in the 4 years you've been away. You'll be working on kit that was old when it was introduced. That's now 4 years older. Fighting fires to keep it going or sitting with your thumb up your a**, bored out of your mind.

True. But 20% of the contract is working on the replacement system, and from what the Microsoft architect told me there is scope for working on the new system when delivered.

I don't have experience on anything post Server 2008, which means doing a course in order to get a contract anywhere near the rate and technical level, and as you know I'm way too lazy for that.

You hit a point after like 15-18 months where you get tired of the enterprise political crap. You want to go where you're keeping yourself on point and making sure you're not getting bored or you stop learning. That's the main thing really.

I'm reaching that point at the moment...
