Evening all.
Well in a couple of months I've got about 5 grand coming my way.
I'm fancying a new motor but I'll be moving into part time work, earning around 800 a month, so a big turbo is out of the question. I do around 1k miles a month, sometimes more. So I'm thinking high power diesel.
I'm a bit weary of vag and Vauxhall (had a Saab 93 1.9 tid and it was unreliable as sin) and I've heard bad things about the newer diesels being unreliable. I was thinking along the lines of a 335d or even a 535d. 06ish plate e90 series. Anyone got any views for or against? Or recommend alternatives? Doesn't have to cost 5k, but I'm after something 06 or newer.
I do find mk2 Octavia vrs tdi's quite tasty, and they can be had for very little really. Advice?

Is £6k enough for an 06+ BMW diesel? Would have thought this was E46 money with some spare cash for maintenance.

Civic 2.2 CTDI?

You're completely barking up the wrong tree.

1. You cannot afford any form of 335D/535D that is not a turd.
2. You cannot afford to run said car anyway.
3. You don't drive very far, so get a petrol.

Is this thread a wind up?
Save yourself a tonne of hassle and buy something someone on a part time wage can run.

I'd be looking at a 2.0 petrol MK2 Focus in a higher trim level - Climate control, decent factory fitted alloys etc.

A cars my only freedom - I don't really do much else. I love driving but I'd like something to put a smile on my face and not ask for fuel every 250 miles. So I don't want an older car because I'll waste the money on junk I don't need. I know cars are awful investments but.
Can easily afford to run a vrs TDI or a Leon Cupra TDI 170. Probably pick up a few extra hours baking around 1100 a month.

£6k wont get you anywhere close to an e91/e60. E46 330d maybe. Could be close to an A4 3.0 TDI Quattro, but they will be pretty poor on fuel.

1k miles a month is nothing really, you could just about get a half decent mk5 Golf GTI for that money. Or a nice Mk4 R32.

Eh? Hardly anything you're likely to buy in the way of a reasonably powered hatch/saloon will skelp through say £70 of fuel in 250 miles unless you drive it like an absolute tool everywhere you go or spend all day every day in stop start traffic.

Don't buy a Leon, please. You will regret it eventually.
Why do you want a diesel? as has been said, you don't do enough miles to warrant it.

I'll soon only be earning a part time wage

somehow i'll be getting some money, best blow it all on a random diesel motor. Brilliant idea

1k miles a month is nowhere close to being diesel territory. That's only 12k miles a year. IMO you need to be doing 18k miles a year at least to make it viable. If MPG is an issue (and at 1k miles a month it shouldn't be) then you need something that will do 30+MPG. Which is just about everything not completely bonkers but then £6k wouldn't really get you into something like that. A nice, low miles E46 330i would be a sound buy at £6k.

m8 u should totally buy a beemer with your whippy compo. free firty diesel, turn off the traction control thats 15 horses worth.

What bour Golf GTTDI red D red I?

If you get some high power TDI car with your 5k on your £££ your going to have a sad time when you have no way of paying for the repair bills on BMW's and VW's (VW's have one of the highest cost per repair for cars looking on what car and which and stuff)

Also why are people banging on about not getting a TDI for 12k miles a year?
I do 6k a year in my passat tdi and its well worth been able to do 50mpg rather than 30-35

Diesel particulate filters is one very good reason to avoid, these give the least trouble on cars that see motorway miles on a regular basis.

At 6k a year your 50mpg saves you 20 quid a month over 35mpg with a petrol. Well worth it, will only take a few years of that to cover your first turbo bill :p
