1940's Night In Birmingham

Yeah agreed it was better before, which is a shame as it seems to be the case with most decent places in Brum, The Wellington was another unknown that the idiots seem to have found now :/

Tell me about it and the same has happened to the Post Vaults, we now use the The Anchor in Digbeth, a bit of a walk out to back of the bus station but at least the beers good. Luckily The Barton Arms is just up the road from me which makes life more passable ;)

The Anchor and The Barton, are they real ale boozers?

They are :) and both have signed up to the CAMRA loyalty discount scheme ;), The Barton is also a superb Thai Restaurant in the other half of the building, is a listed building with amazing Tiles and Grand Staircase and was the Hotel that Laurel & Hardy (and many others) used to stay at when in Birmingham :) :)

Nice one :)

I like the old swing and jazz bands so I say go for it.

I don't imagine there's much of a market for it these days, much less a venue.

I've only seen a similar theme done once for a charity event, it was quite something but it was a lot more than £20 a ticket.

Nothing wrong with having a themed night, and nothing wrong with Vintage, but I dont think using "the blitz" to use as a theme is a good idea :/

There's a huge market for it and events in other parts of country sell out rather quickly if organised and advertised properly and the right price point is met which £20 sits perfectly in.

Again Blitz Balls are a very popular theme already all over the country and have been going down well for years.

The reason there are so many 1940's nights in Birmingham is because the residents harp back to the days when someone was willing to come in and blow up half of the city.

I'm just saying last time I attended one of these events I was brought along as a guest, and from what I could gather tickets were in the hundreds and you were expected to make a sizable donation to their cause.

I just don't see how you'll get a period building with a large dance hall, band, staff and appropriate catering and surroundings for £20 a head. It's ludicrous.

Who said period building? ;) and catering implies food which isn't a norm for events either (unless it's one when they are doing a Marguerite Patten "Ration" Buffet).

The one experience you've had seems to have given you a skewed version of what a typical 40s evening event is like, charity events are a very different breed and mostly created to fleece fat business types of their moola so they look good in front of their peers.

How have you got that from the OP?

Sounds to em like he's organising a night that may become regular if there is enough interest.
