Mitsubishi GTO...talk to me!

You can blame Gran Turismo for my ownership!

To be fair the epic bill is just as likely with a Supra or GTR, in fact its probably less likely with a GTO as the GTR and Supra both come with massive scene tax.

r33/r34 potato/potarto :p

I owned both, on uk roads both were great and very capable, but GTR was better, ok maybe not destroy. ;)

GTR way more fun to drive though, moves around so much more. :)

So I've been looking at some other cars, what do people think of this?

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifi...celica-gt-four-2007/2209898?isexperiment=true

The GT-Four is a fantastic car. Only problem is they are rather cheap for what they are (similar to the GTO they don't have a scene tax associated with them) so finding one in decent condition can be quite hard. People buy them thinking they are a bargain but can not afford the running costs as a lot of parts are bespoke to the model not to mention 21mpg is pretty much normal. They do have a fantastic base though. 4 piston brakes front, twin piston brakes rear, 320mm directional vented discs front and rear, aluminium body pannels, twin entry turbo, torsen LSD at the rear and the super strut setup. The interior is also a lot better compared to other rally reps of that generation with some models getting a 8 speaker setup. Also digital climate is standard on Japanese imports.

The only negative I can see is they are a little under tuned from factory. Standard you have limited boost in first and second with full boost in the following gears. A decat and boost controller totally transforms this. Mine was recently dyno'ed at 320BHP with the standard exhaust. Celica's are notorious for running rich as standard (Antilag) so upping the boost a little is of little problem.

The one you linked looks like a poorly written advert but you never know until you check it out. At a glance the radiator will need replacing in time as the top is starting to turn brown and will eventually crack (£100 from Toyota), Warm the engine up and pull the dipstick to see if smoke comes out (Indication ringlands have gone), check for blue smoke as this is a indication of turbo oil seals, blue smoke from cold is valve stem seals, any clunks from front suspension indicates superstrut parts need replacing. (£500 a side for everything or less if you send off your current parts for a refurb). Also worth mentioning that sunroof models are not for tall people. I am 6ft 2" and just about fit into my non sunroof model.

It does have Teins though which I have on mine. They are £1500-2000 brand new so thats something to think about.

If it has proven suspension, clutch and cambelt work on it then it is worth £4k easily. The rad would be a nice bargaining tool. The prices of these cars is also going up.

Thanks a lot for the reply and we'll spotted on the radiator! I think I'll get in touch with him and see if he has any receipts to back up the work he has claimed to of had done.

The celica is a cracking car for the money they go for no w - the only thing I would say about them is they feel very "safe" compared to the mr2, can't see it being a problem if you were looking at the gto though.

As standard they aren't really in the same straight line performance league, but thats easily sorted

There has been a gto round ipswich lately, such road presence, can hear it a mile off, always loved older sports cars and this one is no exception.

A 300bhp celica seems like it could be fun.

I took my daughter to our local park roughly a year ago and I could hear a loud grumbling noise, i turned around and it was a red gto. It looked and sounded amazing.

The epic bill part is my main worry.

It's a 90's Jap turbo, deal with it or get something with a warranty. :D

You're not going to able to get anything of this age with similar performance and a turbo which won't have the ability to throw up a huge bill.

My Evo, like every other, is a ticking bomb, but I've had it a year now and no nasty surprises. Des drives a R reg Evo 5 and apart from general maintenance and having to change an actuator, it's been well behaved.

You only live once, you clearly want one so just do it and stop worrying.

Sounds like this one,i live on a very busy main road and it sits at the lights below me and can hear it rumbling, when he pulls away its such a deep rumble which you cant get from many cars nowadays.

I've heard that with 4WS cars, you have to be careful not to park them too close (side on) to a wall - because when you pull away, the rear will steer towards it.

Any truth in that?

My dad has a 300ZX twin turbo, but similar to all the mentioned above - really hard to find one that hasn't been ruined by a previous owner.

Buying 90's Jap turbo cars is like gambling - don't spend the money if you can't afford to lose it all.

My friend gets a new car every year - just likes the change and working through his "wishlist" - and he's had a few Jap cars, the RX7 sprngs to mind - bought it for 4K knowing the engine was due to munch it's rotor but he got the full year out of it with some included trackdays before it finally blew the engine and took the gear box with it - he broke it and got £2.5k back for it - so £125 a month for hooning aropund in a 400bhp Jap rocket - some lose more than that on their new 1.6 Focus in a year ;-)

He's got a Noble atm.

A little bit of truth to that but you're only talking a couple of cm at most - the rear wheels don't turn that much - only a few of degrees of deflection.

Yeah you'd have taken the mirror off long before you were close enough for the rear wheels to catch, its a fairly minute range of motion

Well I'm hoping a evo 9 will be my next stepping stone after a celica/gto. I've sent the seller an e mail asking about receipts for the work he has had done to the car so hopefully I'll get a reply today.

That's the type of noise that gets me excited :D

I had one (S plate TT Mk3), it was a fun upgrade from my first FTO.

It felt very fast at the time.. but wasnt nimble by any means.

Would I buy one again, no, however I would get a TVR Chim again (which is what I chopped my GTO in for and never regretted it!)

I pass one on the way to and from work most days, silver with some weird blue eagle/anime decal over most of it, sounds epic even if it does look a bit fast and furious.

I remember hearing quite a few years ago that they were very expensive to fix all the electronics as it has lots of different ECU's but then someone started either repairing or reproducing them so are a lot more affordable to fix nowadays?

The auto ecu is weak as is the main engine ecu but the others tend to be ok. but as you say you can now pickup clones that are reprogrammable for a steal of a price! It will be my next purchase!

Heres a pic of mine :)

It now sports some different wheels and the import front plate has been swapped out for a smaller one.

Gotta love that torque curve! Some of the tuned ones are pretty much a flat line throughout the rev range!

I nearly bought a mint Dark Blue 3000GT. Back in the day they had all the new gizmo's they were my dream car. By the time I could afford one they were dated.

Place near me was supposed to be the best in the country for these cars: Sumiyaka, but it upped and shut down out of the blue :/
