Stewart Lee, good or bad?

Only recently discovered him and although he's not funny all of the time (which is kinda the point) I think he's definitely one of the best.

Far better than Russell Howard and McIntyre, just a completely different level.

I do agree the comments regarding pretentious students (surely, non-students too) and laughing at everything.... but that's hardly a reflection of Lee.

He's not your run of the mill stand up and I think that's partly why he is so marmite. Undoubtedly clever and engaging and therefore capable of holding audiences whilst clearly feeling no pressure to deliver a punchline or laugh every 30 seconds - which is refreshing. On the other hand his confidence sometimes seems more like smugness or superiority and his lengthy diatribes a bit overly self indulgent and/or contrived. Finally - as others have suggested, I often get the sense that there are several massive chips on his shoulders and his material is his vehicle of choice.

Saying all that I do like him! But then I also like Tim Vine...

he's usually a bit left wing but this bit from some of his old material perhaps isn't so much...

He's unashamedly more than a bit left wing. Most of his piece about Paul Nuttall of UKIP was edited out of his latest TV series.

You think there's no sarcasm in his attack on the woman on benefits? Even when he describes himself as a 'hard working comedian who does up to 3 minutes work a day'?

No I don't think there was no sarcasm in that attack, yes he does chuck in self deprecating lines etc.. I'm not sure the whole rant was meant to be totally ironic etc.. It was still partly a rant at the expense of that woman.

You seem to have missed the sarcasm.

He does the same in a more recent show talking about taxes (in which he states that he doesn't want to pay for police, the health service & the money is his).
