£13,000 car for 20k pa

would have thought a decent f10 with a 6 cylinder diseasel was well over budget tbh

If you get an e9x make it an e91 - it should help when you come to move it on as there are really not all that many about, particularly with decent spec

Chris, how much are you really looking to spend?

How long do you plan to keep it for?

Will you mileage go decrease anytime soon?

Will you get warranty?

What would you like the car to have?

Do you really want a BMW?

I ask this as it seems you actually don't have a clue what you want, one minute you're looking at £9.5k passat CC's then £13k 330d's.

If you're absolutely set on a BMW, then only look at BMWs. If they are not to your taste then look at other cheaper/better alternatives.

What year did the E91 being the estate, right?

Chris, how much are you really looking to spend?

Up to £13k. If I can get something that is a nippy cruiser with toys for less and put some money in a service/repair pot then fine. I just want something sub 6 years and something that will last.

How long do you plan to keep it for?

Probably 2-3 years.

Will you mileage go decrease anytime soon?

Potentially. I currently commute 80 miles or so a day. I have an interview for a job on Wesnesday for a job that is 120 miles a day. However, my GF also has also gone for a job in a similar area. This is where it gets difficult, as we may or may not move closer, depending on a few factors beyond my control right now.

Will you get warranty?

I would like to so that any gremlins in the first year or so can be sorted. Certainly if I'm spending £13k.

What would you like the car to have?

Good punchy audio, leather seats, cruise control, voice control (I can live without, but would be nice), sat nav, iPod/Android integration via Bluetooth and/or USB, electric seats.

Do you really want a BMW?

Yes. But I realise that my budget may not reach the one I want unless it's a 320d. And if I bought a 320d I would always regret not spending extra on a 330d.

I never have a clue when I buy cars, hence I'm rubbish at it.

I looked at a few in a Jaguar dealer, albeit they were very expensive. I do like them, but the thing that puts me off is some of the materials in the middle console look a bit cheap, not something I'd expect in an executive car. Apart from that from looking around and sitting in it, I did like it a lot.

Spend less, get a 325i and use the savings to cover the slight increase in consumption?

If you're spending most of your time on motorway 35mpg will be no problem.

Do you want to sell the EVO? How much is it worth?

Whilst it would be expensive, having an EVO like yours at home but pottering around in a CC would be pretty awesome.

Here is a novel idea; change job?

I guess I could get £12k for it. I don't really want to, but I want a nice car and I want to buy a house. The Evo doesn't really fit with that and right now it's just a toy, a rather expensive toy.

If I get this job I'm going for an interview for, then my annual mileage would decrease to about 10k pa if I move home. Two big if's though.

The more I think about it, the more an Octavia looks like an ideal car, rather than going for a BMW.

This is a nice example.

I'd rather get a car that is highly spec'd and newer with less miles, over a 'better' car with higher miles, older and potentially a bit rougher. This Skoda for example has another years warranty, another free service, then I can extend the warranty for £500 for another 2 years. That would give me 3 years complete piece of mind motoring, in a decent looking car, with nice toys, frugal and nippy when I want.

For the same price I'm really scraping the barrel of an E9x BMW that I would like on my drive. I'd rather wait for a few years rather than throw an extra £3-4k at a BMW.

Good call. Nothing wrong with the Octavia.

End of the day, you can't have everything all at the same time, so spend a bit less, sacrifice the car at the moment, and concentrate on the job / house. In a few years, once all that is settled, and you KNOW your finances / commute, you can make the right car decision at that time.

I loved my 335d, and would easily have another. However, despite being the lci e91, it was too small for my growing family, so culled the 335d and the V8 Range Rover, and now only have the 530d and Passat. Sacrifices. It's what it's all about. Maybe in a few years I will get another 335i/d...

Well worth checking the Skoda's out. I didn't like the interior without leather ( and I've never seen the piano black trim inserts either but they look much nicer too) and couldn't see any petrols with the right kit for what I wanted to pay so pretty much just stopped looking at them.

They're decent cars though.

I have dsg fear, would want some sort of cover. The likes of that car if you could extend the Skoda warranty next year then I guess you're covered.

No harm in seeing what a mk6 golf gtd would come in at either

I've been having a look for a similar mileage etc. So far my thoughts are around:

Superb - larger and comfier than the Occty, better spec as well but not much more cash
Passat CC - much nicer than the stock Passat, huge standard spec & can get a decent one for £13k
Lexus IS - huge spec, comfy, not overly exciting but very reliable
Lexus GS - would really like a 450h but realistically the 3L is much cheaper generally.
Honda Accord - bit random but apparently pretty good handling and the 2.2 derv is supposed to be one of the best on the market.

Then had a beautiful sunny hoon with the top down over the weekend and start thinking i'll just grin and bear the high mileage on the mx-5

This is true. Should just sell the Evo and buy a nice 335i. :D

That makes the most sense! It's such a lovely engine (have it in the 135i) and even on shortish journeys I do 30mpg+ with a few miles of blatting on sport mode and quite comfortably hit 35mpg+ on motorways :)
