Price aside GTX 780 or R9 290?

I could do it the other way

GTX 780 if you're a rich dork who doesnt know how to tune/configure your ****
290 if you enjoy more performance for less cash

Dont encourage fanboy behaviour.
So GTX780 is like a trouble free pre-overclock bundle with a price premium;
290 is like buying parts seperately and you get more for less money (i.e. more vram, wider memory bus/higher memory bandwidth), but require user capability of setting up/overclock properly with some chance of things may not go smoothly :p

Lol TIL: being rich is an insult

Ironic it coming from a guy in norway too, you know, one of the wealthiest most financially stable countries in the world with an astronomical cost of living.

Well if you know what you're doing then getting an AMD card to run well isnt an issue.

Broke as a joke here and own a 780, but i didnt go for a brand new one. £290.00 on members market. Yes a new card will have a bit less hassle with warranty should things go wrong. But if buying on the members market im sure any reputable seller will be more than willing to help out with any issues.

Also driver issues: This almost ALWAYS user error, incorrect uninstalls, wrong versions, confusing driver and OC application compatibility issues with **** drivers (Post mantle drivers *Ahem ahem*)

The drivers are basically the same in my experience.
If you get the Powercolor 290 PCS+ it's the same performance as a 290x out of the box.

Probably the best advice in the thread so far from someone who's used both a 780Ti and a 290 Pro.

GTX 780 if you want to game.
290 if you enjoy the Rma process

Dunno mind my 770 blew up last week at 6months old lol.

If it were me tho i'd still go with the 780 just coz nvidia offer physx although you can use it on your cpu with amd its more strain on the cpu and it dont quite work as well, agreed not many games really fully use physx but my fave games to play are the borderlands games so nvidia won for me :) I did have a 7870 and couldnt fault it mind after i tweaked it.

Performance wise, I would say the 290 and 780 are close enough that there isn't a clear winner overall. I would suggest the OP looks at what games they actually play on a regular basis. If any support Mantle, then the 290 is the obvious choice, where if any support PhysX then I would suggest going for the 780. If your favourite games don't fall into either camp, then look up some benchmarks and see if the game performs significantly better on either card.

If none of these produce a clear indication, then simply go for whichever card is cheaper/better looking/fits in with your PC colour scheme. They're both great cards and I seriously can't see you regretting whichever decision you make.

And don't forget to post some pictures when you've decided and it's installed - everyone loves a bit of gratuitous hardware porn on this forum! :)

Sorry thefogo, but this advice is even better than yours. :D

My experience with both has been good (after all, I've been able to play games with both brands ;)). I think that AMD are much closer to Nvidia standards than they used to be (the performance under AA is impressive, for example). Where I would say Nvidia are better is that they require (in my opinion) less potential tweaks / work arounds to get things running the way you want, though this is at present only a minor issue for me. I think the difference between the image quality (or style as I like to refer to it as) of both brands is very small now. In fact, I was somewhat disappointed - and surprised when I went back to AMD (ATi) and noticed how little the difference was (my minds harks back to the articles about IQ re : AMD 6000 series :D). In terms of smoothness (something I think Nvidia excel at), I'd say my 7970 has been very good in that department - maybe not quite a la 480 / 570 (at lower fps), but close enough, I guess. Weighing everything up, it would be a close decision, but mine would be Nvidia.

I had an MSI GTX680 until last week - bought a second hand R9 290 from the members market. Worked straight out the box - no issues and good performance gain.

I was on the fence as I kept hearing scaremongering (like above) about AMD cards being prone to problems and the fact I hadn't used an AMD/ATi card for about a decade. However I can assure you that I've had zero problems and am very happy with my purchase.

The only hassle ive ever had with amd and nvida has been the hardware not the drivers unless i go back the the power vr/geforce 256 or voodoo days now that was a git at times
