I think Capcom really need to put the series to bed now.
I suppose it's hard for them to cater to both casual players and longtime fans of the series. Personally I would love another pre-rendered background game with the fixed camera angles, proper inventory management, actual suspense and a decent soundtrack. Unfortunately that doesn't appeal to the ADHD kids who the series now seems to be aimed at.
They make Capcom far too much money for them to stop, Resident Evil 2,3,5 & 6 are in the top ten of Capcom's all time highest selling games and their only other notable franchises are Monster Hunter & Street Fighter.
If RE6 showed anything, it was that their needs to be a radical change in the direction they are taking the series.
Why did 6 sell so well? It was in the bargain bin 2weeks after release.
Why didn't 4 sell too well?
I really enjoyed Leons story in res 6, But that's only because it felt like old school res.
I think initially it was a Gamecube exclusive (although it did later arrive on other platforms)
thought the other platforms would count towards that though.
