R9 290 vs GTX 770

It's not even a contest. The r9 290 is a good chunk faster. The gtx770 is equivalent to the r9 280x on the amd side. The price makes the r9 290 an even easier choice.

Well the chap I was talking to was giving it all sorts about NVidia's native particle engine or something...

Sounded a bit like hocus pocus to me...

Probably talking about Physx which is a Nvidia technology but it's use in games is pretty limited and even then only a few make good use of it. It's a plus on the Nvidia side but amd have there own low level api and true audio as features nvidia don't have. There are other features on both sides but purely from a power point the r9 290 is the better card.

yeah if you can get one that works which going by a few forums seems to be a bit of a rarity

According to information in another thread return rates are 5% on both sides. That gives you a 95% chance of receiving a working card. I would take those odds any day of the week.

im standing at a 0% success rate, ive bought 2 amd cards, one from ocuk and one from a competitor and in the process of having to return both as neither seem to be working properly. either that or not having a clue about pcs and unsure how you actually set up a gfx card

Running both cards:

And the R9 290 easily outmatches the GTX 770 especially at the resolution you are planing to play at. So as stated by others, get the R9 290 and you will be set for a while to come.

The GTX 770 l have runs quieter and uses less power.

However now that l have fitted a NZXT KRAKEN G10 + H55, the R9 290 is quieter and cooler.
