Looking for a new motor...

There are two - Business and Professional. Business has a crappy little screen and no hard drive, Professional has a big 10.2" high definition widescreen with more functions, a built in hard drive, better resolution, etc.

If you want a 520d, then yes, thats what you should aim for at £25k. Or spend less if you want older.

530d wise, 21-24k should get a nice 2010 530d SE.

Thanks..that narrows it down quite a lot..I definitely want the bigger screen if I do go down the BMW route. Mileage wise, is that important, should I go for a higher mileage car with better spec or vice versa? also what should I look out for as well...

I'm all about the spec.
If you're spending this much then really you should get one with as many options as possible. (IMHO, obviously)

GTs tend to have better spec as I said.. Drive both and see what you prefer.

I still maintain that Adaptive Drive or whatever it's called is a must.
If you do plump for a GT, get one with Comfort Seats. There are plenty around.

FWIW, I'd also hold out for Heads Up Display but I doubt you'll ever find one.

This morning I test drove a 2011 BMW 520d SE and a 2010 520d Msport...both were very nice cars indeed..however I then went to test drive an 2012 Audi A6 S line 2.0tdi and was just as impressed, however..three things are realistically going to swing it in favour of the Audi, the Salesman was better for a start but more importantly I like the look of the A6 better than the BMW and its cheaper. I will decide at the weekend when I have slept on it and listened to a few people in the Audi thread.

Fox you were right about the A4/5..the interior is severely dated by comparison to the BMW and A6 and the quality isn't there either, which narrowed it down quite a lot.

I prefer the C7 A6 over the F10 5 Series :). Plus you can choose to get Quattro AWD on the Audi which is good in my book, whereas BMW don't offer AWD on the 5 Series.

Though much as the picture quality of the high resolution Sat Nav on the A6 is great, I would kinda agree with what others have said elsewhere that the screen being pop-up just isn't as nicely integrated as on the BMW.

2012 was the year the A6 changed to the new model. It is unusual that a 2012 A6 would be cheaper than a 2010 5 Series so PLEASE make sure its the current model and not the ancient old model that came out in 2004. They are far too dated to spend big money on, if you like the old shape A6 buy one for £10k not £20k+.

Got a link to the car you are considering?

Also I'd be very interested in how you found the relative ride quality SE versus M Sport. I've not driven an M Sport F10 yet - only Adaptive Drive and conventionally sprung SE's and an M5, so I've no idea what its like without driving one myself.

I got close to buying both f11 and gt, I am more or of a fan of the gt than most, it is a corking package. I ended up with an X5 because I am a bit of a ****.

Yeah this is the A6: http://www.pooleaudi.co.uk/vehicle/a6-saloon/20-tdi-177-ps-s-line/hg61cwn

It is a new model (it came out in 2011 apparently), and compared to the BMW's seems a bargain.

As far as the difference between the SE and Msport..the Msport was a noticeably harder on admittedly poor road surfaces, but it was crisper and more agile in the bends..road noise was similar and I preferred the MSport overall, but it was a harder ride, but not enough in my opinion to choose and SE over it...if you like the styling and so on that an MSport gives you that is.

I've never sat in an A6 but from photographs the interior doesn't look half as inviting as that in the F10. The way the F10's interior just flows around you with its properly integrated screen etc etc and leather trimmed console is just wonderful. How did the A6 compare in the flesh?

There is not much to choose between them, the BMW with the larger screen is better than the one with the smaller screen which ruins the aesthetic of the interior in my opinion, the A6 has a slightly nicer feel to it, but that is subjective and I like the pop-up screen which can be stowed away if you don't want to look at it. The only criticism I have of the A6 is cubby space is limited, the door bins are a bit small, especially on the drivers door and the glove-box is a bit too shallow..but they are not deal breakers for me. It was the premium you pay for the BMW that doesnt seem justified given the almost (but not quite) quality of the materials in the A6..the A6 did seem to be bolted together slightly better however, hard to put a finger on it, but it just seemed more solid than the BMW. Overall, there is not much between them.

Photos do not do it justice, that is for sure.

So, I bought the Audi A6 at just over £20k. I should take delivery sometime during the next week. Very happy with both the service and the car. I will post some pics when it arrives.

Thanks for everyone help.
