As per title - my sister is going to Vietnam for four weeks on a medical placement.

What currency wound you say from experience is best to take?

From what I've read online so far it seems to suggest a mixture of Vietnamese Dong and US dollars.

I've no experience but I know a friend of mine gets US Dollars when he goes home to Vietnam.

I don't plan to visit there any time soon, but I'm going to have get some currency in large bills so that I can change say "I need to change my Dong for something smaller".

Must resist making dong jokes. :(

You're a better man than I :o

Lots of dong. Lots.

Be careful it doesn't get wet in the rain though. No one likes a soppy dong.

Dollars.

Beware that they must pristine, as in perfect. Even folded in a wallet isn't good enough and will likely get rejected.

Dollars or Dong, I took Dong when I went last month it's just you get very large denomination of notes i.e. 250,000 notes. Not a problem really.

I live in Hanoi. She can just draw out the cash she needs as and when she needs it with her UK debit card. I lived that way until my first pay check here no problem.

Slightly misleading. They'll accept notes that have been folded. But they most likely won't accept faded, dog-eared notes. I had no problems with any USDs when I was there. Unlike other South-East Asian countries (like Laos or Cambodia) where they predominantly use USD, in Vietnam they use dong (pronounced more like "dom").

Also, too late but a clarity card would have worked well for her.
