W905 and W955 Sony Debacle

And having one sat in my lounge with the latest software updates on it and it happily being used by my Mrs and Kids with no tweaking or otherwise I'd suggest that review needs revisiting since the software changes.

It might not have the ultimate black levels of 905, which I'll know for sure tonight when I get to play properly, but the viewing angles and total lack of colour cast that the 905 suffers makes it much more suitable to our needs.

Mate software changes can't change the hardware, the IPS screens from LG are shockingly bad for black levels, banding and DSE.

really?

so i take it you know the manufacturing as well as R & D costs? then all the extra costs of shipping them halfway around the world, storing them, testing them, etc, etc. the staff's wages, taxes paid, etc.

it's hard to see them turning a profit on a TV with a RRP of £1500+ being sold for £660, if so then Sony wouldn't be making huge losses.

you do know Sony as a whole are doing terribly and have made huge losses over the past decade iirc?

Sony will be out of the TV market within the next 3 years

Having one of these sat in my lounge, I'd say that the blacks are not the best but are more than acceptable, I watched Pacific Rim and Underworld last night and didn't notice the blacks at all and have no banding or DSE visible on football that I flicked on last night on BT Sport HD.

The blacks aren't as good as the 905 admittedly but anything off axis on the 905 soon becomes a pink washed out mess so depends on what you value...

Pretty much this.

Sony could have just told everyone where to go regardless of what the mob on HUKD think their rights are.

If an item has clearly been mispriced then they don't need to honour anything.

Especially since stock levels of such item are extremely low as well that they now need to give a £1500 TV for £660 due to the masses of orders.

To the people who bought it on a gamble well done, the the ones on HUKD demanding the TV or a better one from Sony after they told them it was a misprice, hopefully karma gets them back.

It was a genuine mistake and the people who think Sony owe them something deserve nothing. To the ones who didn't pressure Sony well done on grabbing yourself a bargain.

I've bought a mispriced item posted on there before but all I got was a £5 off voucher or something for my troubles.

Actually the OP was slightly incorrect so SONY couldn't have done anything else but honour it. They broke their own T+C's.

It wasn't a misprice. It was a genuine price for 7 refurbs. However the website allowed 400 orders to be placed, money taken (£264000) and an order number assigned. Their T+C's states that at this point a contract is formed.

They tried to offer all orders a reduced price of £950 which most denied. If they didn't have to I doubt they would have then honoured the £660. They would have said we tried to be fair and give you it for £950 but you said no.

I was? Sorry where was I? :D

In other news.

This W955 just kicks my ass. A lot of people complaining about the blacks being better on the W905, but tbh, my frame of reference is a 5 year old 42" LG.

Its like with any new purchase you make, you want to maximise your £££ for what you have purchased and not feel screwed.

But tbh, for £660, I don't give two poos :) This is an outstanding TV and I think reviewers ought to consider not only what was on offer yesteryear, but yesteryears.

Mate if you have no DSE and no banding then you are very very lucky and keep a hold of the tv as long as you can, as I said the IPS screens are horrible, I went through 3 55ET60's and 2 55DT65's hence the reason I have gone to the sony 55W829.

See I consider this bordering obsession :D

But if the IPS screens are by their very nature like that then surely you shouldn't buy it if it gives you grief? (Or am I missing the point here?)

Out of curiosity, whats the lighting like in your environment? Ceiling lights? bright lights or small low lit lamp in a corner somewhere?

Lots of natural light in the room during day, during night typically have the ceiling lights on or sometimes just a table lamp in the corner.

Tbh, for me its viewing angle > better blacks etc.
That's why I went with the 955.
Are you saying viewing angle trumps better blacks? 905 definitely seems to be superior for blacks, and for gaming/movies, unless you're sitting at quite a sharp angle, I would have thought this would matter more. Certainly every review I've read of the 955 complains about blacks being inferior (due to the IPS panel), and that 905 is a superior set. Seems a step backwards to me.

Yes he is as the viewing angles on the 905 are dire, at a few degrees off straight on it gets a nasty colour caste.

I've bought the 955 and to be honest I'm chuffed with it. The black levels while not being 905 or plasma good are better than people seem to be suggesting. With it setup in my lounge and viewing it during the day and evening I'm chuffed. The colour from the screen is immense, hd inputs look stunning, even sky hd not just Blurays, it's a brilliant TV.

I saw both these TV's side by side in a major retailer last night with the same feed going through them, I honestly couldn't tell which was best - they both looked good to me!

From what I've read, it's in a darkened room with movies in-particular that the blacks issue becomes far more apparent. In a normally lit room I don't think you would notice that much of a difference.

In my lounge where it's sensibly lit I have no issues with the blacks in movies. If I watch in a blacked out room then maybe I'd be bothered but I don't as I don't find that a particularly relaxing way to watch films.

given how most major retailers set up their display models, no one would be able to tell (its just down to how badly / dont bother setting them up for display purposes)

Find this hard to understand, you dont feel comfy going to the cinema (for the same reason)?

edit - just to clarify, while I dont sit in a fully dark room, I have a standard lamp over My shoulder to one side focused directly away from the screen which is a whole lot better than any "main lighting" while watching tv / film

watching a movie in darkness is great so long as you have BIAS lighting (to reduce eye strain).

but for everything else, gaming, live sports, etc, a decently lit room is best, not too bright but not too dark either.

this goes for any tv regardless of it's panel

Unless my local cinema does something different to the others in the country they don't black the place out, they keep mild lighting on.

At home I tend to have 30w of lighting in the room when I watch films, and everything else is overhead lighting.
