OK, so last night I watched Tom Daley goes Global, a program where he, along with his friend Sophie, supposedly backpack around the world.
Last night they were in Japan.
Now I felt every person they met, and everything that you saw on camera was contrived, scripted and pre-planned.
My wife says I am cynical. But really?
Lets look at the evidence.....they go shopping in a cosplay store and there just happens to be 3 mental cases in there who all speak passable English, and who show Tom and Sophie around the store and pick out some costumes for them. They then announce by complete coincidence that they are heading out for a night of Karaoke, and invite Tom and Sophie along. Wait what....really? Cue more cheesy contrived scenes of them trying to sing.
In another part of the show Tom and Sophie meet a Japanese Geiko just randomly walking down the street. They have a bit of an inane chat and take a photo, then it is announced that by sheer luck, the Geiko is on her day off and Tom and Sophie should join them at their home! Wait what??
Is this really how bad television programs have got?
Sure there has to be an element of direction in the show, and an element of pre planning, but the only passable 'real' thing I saw in that show is when Tom dropped the 'F-bomb', seemingly by accident. I bet the editor had to include that just to give the program the tiniest shred of spontaneity.
So am I cynical, or is Tom Daley Goes Global just plain old ****?
Where is Michael Palin when you need him??
