So what is the law on filming people, overall, in public or private etc, I have searched but it seems to be a grey area that doesn't have a complete definition, or maybe not?

On public property no right to privacy is expected, so fill your degenerate boots and film away. On private property you need to have permission from the owners. That's how I understand it anyway.

public should be ok,

hidden in their closet or through their bedroom window not so ok

Something slightly related... What about those TV programmes where they film the police arresting people? I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want my face on TV if I had just been arrested! Do they have a right to say no?

You're in a public place, so no.

Your much better debating skills clearly showed here and consider my previous statement null and void. ;)

Tell us more kindai.

You don't have the right to stop them filming you, however that doesn't mean they are allowed to broadcast you getting nicked without your consent :) which would be more relevant to gmans question, can he say no to the show...

Are you seriously suggesting that the scrotes on all shows shows gave permission to be shown? Can't see it myself.

Why wouldn't they be able to? Obviously there are interests towards the right to privacy, but I suspect that the police programmes that show you getting nicked probably justify it that it's within the public interest to show such a thing.

I think they get bunged a few quid and that's enough. Being arrested isn't something to be ashamed of for the shameless lot, quite the opposite for many of them I'd imagine.

There was that program where they used to lay bait for thieves, Swag was it? Anyway, I think it was presented by Donal MacIntyre, he said that they were mostly enthusiastic about being on TV and wanted to know when it would air so they could tell their mates. Not sure if being under arrest changes things.

Someone getting arrested is a serious matter and those on camera do not have to sign a release which in turn would allow their identities to be concealed. A broadcaster can then show their face anyway if they think it is in the public interest to do so.

If the person being filmed is also involved in a criminal investigation or being tried in a court of law at the time of broadcast, their identity also have to be concealed by default.

Police officers involved in filming don't have to reveal their identity either.

If you are using it commercially you need a release form for visible faces.

And property. Model and Property releases, the bane of some of my work. Chasing people for missing forms is a bore.
