Nope, that's what happens if you break a spoke on low spoke count wheels with the narrow clearance on a road frame.

After I had it happen to me I went from some 20f/24r wheels to 24f/28r just to give me a slightly better chance of not being stranded.

Maybe handbuilts?

Then if a spoke breaks you can get it easily serviced by a local wheel builder.

Yep think when these wear out I will be looking for something a bit stronger I think. Probably stretching the limit on weight with these anyway. On a more positive note Evans have loads of spares for these wheels, so ordered in a couple of spares for all lengths. Should get them next week some time. Meanwhile I have a spare rear wheel which I`m trying to fit the 10 spd cassette on to. Might be needing a spacer though!

Since I got recommeneded not to buy some shiney carbon wheels and instead look at some hand built wheels I took a trip down to my local bike shop Yorkcycleworks.

They suggested the following build :-

Dt competition Black spokes

Hope RS hubs

H+Son Archetype Rims

Setup as Tubeless:eek:

Hes convinced me there are very few if any drawbacks of tubeless besides the initial cost.

Thoughts ?

There are very few drawbacks, but then there isnt as many advantages either.

A slight weight saving maybe with the weight of sealant vs inner tube.
Maybe slightly better puncture resistance? (small holes will seal up instantly - but objects only need to puncture the tyre, rather than tyre + tube)
Cant really think of anything else?

He mentioned comfort and performance due to how the tyre sits. Can you use the same tyres you use with inner tubes? Or do you have to buy specific tubeless tyres?

He's also obviously sold me the pros of handbuilt wheels but what are the cons? Again apart cost , is there any ?

You can get tyres designed to work tubelessly (but work with tubes as well). I think most tyres will work. Maybe try asking in the MTB thread? It's much more common to run tubeless on a MTB because you can run really low pressures to get maximum grip without the risk of pinch flats.

Nope, i cant think of any. (other than cost obviously)

Tubeless you are quite limited on the brans of tyres you could put on, something to think about. You can have them built tubeless (with the tape) but run them normal clincher if you want.

Food for thought , think I'll definailty go the handbuilt option as it seems to make sense. I've googled the hub and rims and they seem decent enough.

All set just need to decide tubeless or not unless anyone can see any potential pitfalls

Thinking of getting the Triban 3 from Decathlon. I know it's recommended here a fair amount as the best budget bike but does anyone know if they ever have discount vouchers etc? Or anything to look out for?

It's only for my gf to commute a mile or so to work every day so I'm sure it'll be fine.

Also her size bike (48) comes with 650 wheels. Any problem with that?

There must have been about 20-30 cyclists on the same small 20 mile loop as me yesterday and about 40 walkers though :| and some people ride so slow~

Not sure whether to do 30 miles again or just ride to the local moor and lie down on a hill for a bit or not :|
