Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [18th April - 22nd April 2014]

Before we get into a big debate on this, do we know if this tweet is even legit?

I highly doubt Chelsea's official account tweeted that and a quick skim on twitter makes me all but certain that it's made up. If the did tweet something like that then every single football journalist would have picked up on it.

And on a side point, had he not already been suspended, Purdy was getting suspended today.

As I say BaZ happy to retract if not true

Such a classy manager isnt he??? lol

skysports said:
"I just want to say four things and I'm sorry because if you ask me more questions, I'll repeat exactly the same thing," said Mourinho, who had not spoken at his previous three press conference following his fine for entering the pitch during a defeat at Aston Villa last month.

"Congratulations to my players because they gave what they have and what they don't have.

"Congratulations to Sunderland, because they won.

"Congratulations to Mike Dean, because he made a fantastic performance.

"And congratulations to Mike Riley, because what they did during the season was fantastic for the way the championship is going.

"Congratulations to all of them - and I have nothing more to say."

LOL stay classy Mourinho:p

Chelsea becoming the new specialists in failure...all dat money and so far nothing to show for it:p

A horribly frustrating game today but you can't blame Sunderland for their tactics.
I had a feeling before the game that they'd somehow end JM's home record so it's not all bad I guess -

Why the confusion ??

It was supposed to be the official twitter account therefore the official mouth piece of the club
******* horrible excuse for a club yearning to have their own history beyond 'The Roman Empire'

I expected better from you.

Disappointed you backed against your own!
I wonder what sort of fine he'll get for suggesting that the referees are working together to fix the outcome of the league.
He won't get reprimanded. It's a competitive finish, he was being earnest :)

Genuinely gutted when we took the lead earlier. What a strange feeling wanting your team to lose is.

#nufc run: 13 defeats in 18 games. 11 goals scored. Deep problems. No direction or inspiration, but crowd: 51,057
Pardew is also the first NUFC manager to lose 5 consecutive games in the Premier League.

He's also the first to get them near the champions league in a decade (OK, they missed out, but not by much).

For the record, I'm no Pardew fan, in the slightest, but you've got to take the bad with the good.

Is Pardew just being kept around to deflect the attention from Ashley?

Without wanting to sound disrespectful to Newcastle, they've found their level for the time being. Similarly to what I said about Arsenal and their owner, from a financial point of view the risk and cost to take Newcastle to the next level just doesn't make sense. Newcastle would have to spend an additional £20m per year and maybe they'd gain a few places in the League (which wouldn't even return that investment). For them to make a return on their investment Newcastle would need to get into the CL and Newcastle could spend an additional £60m per year (transfer fee and wages combined) for the next few years and still not make the CL.

Ashley's happy while Newcastle are sitting comfortable in midtable with little to no outlay. And having Pardew around takes a lot of the heat off him.

Near Champions League? What does that even mean? Take the good with the bad? There is absolute nothing good about this football club.

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I'm sure in a pure transfer sense, they're many millions positive. Between Carroll a few years ago and Cabaye, they've hardly invested much of that back in the team.

You can't hope to progress if you keep selling your best players*. Buying relatively cheap from France can't keep on reaping benefits, especially if you're selling European class players and attempting to replace them - there's only so much untapped talent in an area you can realistically reap, regardless of how good your scouting team are.

* Don't get me wrong, if I was at Newcastle and Liverpool offered £35m, I'd rip their arms off, but all of that has to be reinvested if you want to have a hope of progressing. While Carroll was a flop at Liverpool (it hardly went smoothly for him to be fair, as it hasn't at West Ham), you have to assume Newcastle didn't know that, and he was becoming key on Tyneside... who knows that would have happened had he stayed.
