To set the scene; we have a late 50ish neighbour who we get on quite well with, almost every evening, rain or shine, he's in his back garden reading the paper and having a few* drinks.

Yesterday we had a family bbq, and usually we give him a burger or so over the fence, however, the last few nights we haven't seen him, his cat hasn't been out, and his kitchen light has been left on.

He's gotten out of hospital recently, after having an ulcer (due to his drinking) which apparently would have been fatal if he'd left it much longer.

He's also recently gotten a girlfriend, who by the sounds of it also has a bit of a drink problem, they've been out there getting hammered every night.

Anyway, my gf being the concerned and caring type was worried that we've not seen him recently, so called the police non emergency no saying she was worried about him having collapsed or something.

They came out, had a little chat with us (fair enough), and then smashed his back door in (ooer misses!) =( didn't find anything tho thankfully. However, his back garden is now a mess, with his back door boarded up.

Did we do the right thing, or should we have kept our noses out? It's a council rented property, so he won't have to pay for repairs, but feeling rather guilty =/

You done the most reasonable thing you could possibly do, I wouldn't worry about it!

Sounds like you both had the best of intentions to me. Even if it leads to a wrong result every now and then, it's never wrong to be conscious for the safety of others :)

Rather that than someone pulls a body out in a couple of weeks. Yes, you did the right thing.

Don't think I would have done the same. How do you know he wasn't on Holliday, especially if this was today on a bank Holliday weekend.

Seems like a mental over reaction to me but amass done is done. You paying to get his door refitted?

Oh Lucky him he won't have to pay sarcasm

he probably just stayed over at his new GF's house for a few nights, and left his light on to deter burglars so when he got home his back door wouldnt have been smashed in, oops

Absolutely the right thing to do. I can remember an old man who lived across from my Nana being found in his house 3 weeks after he had died, and was only discovered because the neighbours reported a bad smell they presumed was from the drains.

Well, the light which was on isn't visible unless you've gone through 2 gates and are already in his back garden =P

Your missus is a nosey neighbour

Sorry i was writing from the toilet on my tablet lol...

It seems like a bit of an overreaction to me the course you took but whats done is done, especially over an Easter holiday period.

I would be pretty peeved about the door regardless of your best intentions. You say he doesn't have to pay? 100% sure? i'm sure he will have a nominal charge?

Anyway you are probably a better neighbor than me, all be it a bit hasty.
