did we do the right thing?

Sorry i was writing from the toilet on my tablet lol...

It seems like a bit of an overreaction to me the course you took but whats done is done, especially over an Easter holiday period.

I would be pretty peeved about the door regardless of your best intentions. You say he doesn't have to pay? 100% sure? i'm sure he will have a nominal charge?

Anyway you are probably a better neighbor than me, all be it a bit hasty.

Haha, charming! Well to be honest we didn't think the police would just knock his door down like that, figured they would ring round hospitals (they did) to see if he'd gone back in and put a note to keep an eye on the address or so.

If it turns out he does have to pay, then yeah, we'll be giving him the money for it, but the copper said as it was a council home he wouldn't have to.

Yes, plus asked neighbours both sides if they knew where he was, neither had seen or heard him for a few days and also thought it a bit unusual.

In that case I think you did the right thing. I expect your neighbour won't be best pleased at first, but I'm sure he'll appreciate the sentiment eventually :) I know I'd appreciate it.

In that case I think you did the right thing.

Exactly what I thought. You didn't mention in your OP that you checked the door and with neighbours first - read like you went straight to police which would have been a bit ott imho. But since you checked first I think you did the right thing looking out for them.

I was similarly nosey once - when filling a skip in my front garden I could hear a faint high pitch noise which I eventually figured must be a smoke alarm. Was hard to locate so I wandered up and down the road a bit till I worked out it was coming from a house opposite. Nocked on the door - no answer. Peeked through some windows, neighbour tried calling the guy, couldn't get through. Eventually I could see smoke through the letter box at which point I dialled 999. When they arrived they knocked the door in and found a pan left on a stove about to go up in flames.

So that's right GD - I'm a real hero! :) Owner was pretty pleased his house didn't burn down when he got back. A hot fire babe said I was awesome too (not in those exact words but that's what she meant). So definitely worth being a bit of a nosey neighbour and looking out for them and investigating these things. You'd hope they would do the same for you.

Police wouldn't have smashed the door down just for ***** and giggles, it's a legit concern you raised and I'm sure if he was laying half concious in a pool of his own vomit and **** he'd have been greatful that you helped prevent him becoming brown bread.

You did what any decent human would do and informed the authorities of your concern

What they do from that point is their responsibility

You did the right thing. But if he is safe and sound you should let him smash your back door in to compensate for causing his back door to be smashed in. It's only fair.

To set the scene; we have a late 50ish neighbour who we get on quite well with, almost every evening, rain or shine, he's in his back garden reading the paper and having a few* drinks.

Yesterday we had a family bbq, and usually we give him a burger or so over the fence, however, the last few nights we haven't seen him, his cat hasn't been out, and his kitchen light has been left on.

He's gotten out of hospital recently, after having an ulcer (due to his drinking) which apparently would have been fatal if he'd left it much longer.

He's also recently gotten a girlfriend, who by the sounds of it also has a bit of a drink problem, they've been out there getting hammered every night.

Anyway, my gf being the concerned and caring type was worried that we've not seen him recently, so called the police non emergency no saying she was worried about him having collapsed or something.

They came out, had a little chat with us (fair enough), and then smashed his back door in (ooer misses!) =( didn't find anything tho thankfully. However, his back garden is now a mess, with his back door boarded up.

Did we do the right thing, or should we have kept our noses out? It's a council rented property, so he won't have to pay for repairs, but feeling rather guilty =/

Have to say, if this ever happened to me, I'd be kicking up a fuss with the company and wanting to know where my laptop/iPad/mobile/etc. had disappeared to... ;)

:D

Done the right thing imo. The police iirc will replace the door.

If the guy had been dead or dying then you would never forgive yourself.

Might be worth having a chat with him when he gets back explaining why you did what you did.
