Hello, I feel it's time to have a go at water cooling my PC. Having had my case for several years now im feeling adventurous and rather than upgrade, i've open to getting the old dremill out and cutting the old gal up!

So, knowing little about water cooling components I turn to you, the OCUK community to help me decide on the best setup for my case. I would appreciate suggestions of all inclusive spec, placement of components etc.

Initial requirements are:
- GPU and CPU cooled. In future i will run multi-GPU.
- Good quality components to transfer/upgrade to next built.
- My budget is £450

I’m thinking, 240 rad top pushing air up, 240 rad front pushing air out? past that I don't know!

Thanks.

Oh, here's a profile of my current setup:

As you said you are willing to get the dremel out and cut her up, i will recommend aiming for a 240 on the roof and a 360 in the front. Always have the radiator air pushing out of the case if you can, regardless of where the radiators are positioned. If a 360 is too big to fit in the front, a 240 is still a lot of radiator anyway.

Two 290's and a overclocked 4770k would be fine on 480 worth of radiator if the clocks on the GPU's are mild to moderate, not that they have to be overclocked at all to get decent performance.

I would aim for a minimum of 65mm of clearance for radiator and a single set of fans, as there is a fair amount of choice in the 40mm radiator thickness range and fans are usually 25mm thick. Though the more clearance you have the more choice you get!

This is where i would spend the cash. I have left £50 of the budget to be spent on fluid, angle fittings or changing parts for slightly more expensive parts more to your aesthetic preferences.

YOUR BASKET
1 x EK Water Blocks EK-FC R9-290X - Acetal £79.99
1 x EK Water Blocks EK-Supremacy Clean CSQ - Acetal £49.99
1 x EK Water Blocks EK-CoolStream PE 360 (Triple) £49.99
1 x EK DCP 4.0 Pump (12v) £39.98
1 x EK Water Blocks EK-CoolStream PE 240 (Dual) £39.95
1 x Aqua Computer Aqualis ECO 100ml with Nano Coating £34.99
2 x Corsair SP120 Performance Series High Pressure - Dual Pack (CO-9050008-WW) £22.00 (£44.00)
1 x Corsair SP120 Performance Series High Pressure - Single Pack (CO-9050007-WW) £10.08
2 x Primochill Primoflex Advanced Tubing 13/10 - Clear £5.99 (£11.98)
12 x EK Water Blocks EK-CSQ Fitting 10/13mm G1/4 - Black £2.99 (£35.88)
Total : £406.40 (includes shipping : £8.00).

If you dont know what to spend the remaining cash on, you can go for nickel versions of the above blocks (an aesthetic option), monsoon fittings (another aesthetic option) or a different high end block (they all perform practically the same as each other when you get to the £50 mark, so really another aesthetic option). I included a tube reservoir, as a bay res will limit the space for radiator if you plan to cut the front up to fit one there. If you cant fit a 360mm, i would look at external DVD player to make more space too, as these Hawaii GPU's do appreciate the extra headroom.

If it was my money the remaining £50 would be spent on:

1.Fluid from Mayhems or Koolance (a must lol)
2.£15 on a few rotary angle fittings to connewct eh CPU and GPU cleanly without loops of tubing
3. external DVD player, so you can fit maybe a bigger radiator in the front
4. Spray paint for the silver bits of the case and some pre-braided cables
5. If you dont mind adding more cash, you can go for a D5 pump, though i will say that it is an expensive upgrade considering you will gain no tempereture performance

Most of the gear i chose was from EK. IMO those PE rads are unbeaten in value and performance in that price category. The blocks are top performers too but as i mentioned before, there are other options if you dont like their look. XSPC make good blocks (although the CPU mounting is a little annoying), Koolance 380i is also a great block. I usually choose EK because i am familiar with their range and their CPU blocks come with mounts for all sockets and you have the option to buy spare tops (for all kinds of EK blocks) if you want to change colour or replace a cracked top, these spares cost about £10 last time i checked. There are also naked mounting plates if you fancy de-lidding and having direct chip contact, these only cost a couple of quid and does not just ensure good contact but prevents you from cracking the chip.

I don't recommend EK because i feel they are superior. IMO pretty much all the entry level gear is roughly the same (apart from the PE radiators which are great) and same could be said for the upper end blocks. I recommend them because the blocks tend to come with everything and spares can be bought for the blocks to replace parts which would put the block out of commission if damaged. The 4.0 pump is the cheapest powerful pump available, the only things worth considering over it, costs a fair chunk more and will likely require a pump top too.

my oh my...

Firstly, many thanks for your reply. I've spent lots of time measuring up my case and playing with the config you recommended.

Taking your advice, I've upgraded to a D5, hopefully i can use this on my next build. I've got 65mm clearance up top so a 240 will fit with fans too.

Up front, if i do as suggested and remove my ODD I can fit a 240, just. However, if i cut into the case (horizontal panel) I can then fit a 360 radiator with enough depth to go for 64mm + fans; the EK XTX?

That being said, my concern is that i'm blocking cool air flow to my SSD/HDD so is a 360 rad really worth the upgrade and furthermore, is a 64mm then overkill for my setup even if i do eventually get another GPU?

Although i'm over my budget i've accounted for paint, fluid etc.... just not sure what colour scheme to go for yet. I guess that's the easy bit!

Thanks again.

Dont worry about air flow for HDD's. SSD's dont heat up and HDD's don't need cooling unless you do something that has it constantly writing for endless hours and even still your case will have enough airflow to keep them cool enough.

If it were my choice, PE EK radiators for good value for money and top performing thin radiators but if you can afford to spend more, the RX v3 XSPC radiators offer awesome performance at all fan speeds.

Sweet.

- I'll go for the RX v3 too - thanks.
- Swapped out the fans for low noise.
- added fluid :)
> will get angle fittings when i get everything positioned

Here's my updated basket. Any last min suggestions?

I've some final final changes bringing me well over budget but hey-ho:
EK Water Blocks EK-Supremacy Clean CSQ - Acetal > Nickel
EK Water Blocks EK-FC R9-290X > Aqua Computer Kryographics + Backplate.

Some stuffs is OOS, hopefully there's major delay to my order though....

I'm waiting for the same cpu block mate, hopefully next week

while i'm waiting for my order to be processed i've been reading up on setup and testing the loop...

I would like to plan for changing fluid in the future. I've read that people turn their pc's upside down to filter their loops but I certainly won't be doing this.

Is there a better/neat solution to drain a custom loop? Quick Disconnects from Koolance seem a little expensive for such a task...

itching to start....

brill, got my supplies from OCUK. Just a few more packages to arrive and I can get started. Looking forward to this build; Kryographics Nickel looks good:

For my draining, i have abandoned drain ports for an extra long bit of tubing i can hide away, which lets me pull my reservoir out and drain it directly from there.

Those kryo blocks look nice, their performance is top among the 290/290x blocks too.

hmmm...that's so simple! i'll try and do the same in my setup. thanks again.

the pics i took are quite poor but yeh, they look good in person and from what i have read the performance is top so it's a win win. hopefully the install will be straight forward....

pc parts all over the house. still need to cut a vent for top rad. lots more paint to apply. sick of removing millions of rivets.

watercooling parts are still boxed... sooo tempted to just buy a fancy new case and be done with it....

had some time to work on this project and get the main case mods out of the way. Here's a few pics...

Mobo tray has been painted jet black. Also added new holes (1 top and 2 right of pic) for routing cables and cut out area to access CPU backplate.
2_zps9c714477.jpg

After finally removing millions of rivets I was able to access the horizontal panel causing most of my difficulties; an ample section has been removed to allow for a front mount 360 rad. Added a bit of colour too!

The vent for the top rad was a pain to cut out tbh. It's not the best but my dremel burnt out mid way so I had to complete this with a junior hacksaw and lots of filing. I'm glad to be done with it.

Here's the top vent with grills. It will do!

i will post with an update when i'm further along....

That actually looks like a really neat job. I see the imperfections but they are very minor and considering the tools you had at your disposal you've done really well. You generally pay for imperfections like that nowadays lol jk. Looking good I'll be watching

That's pretty good mate, considering your Dremel died half way through. it's much better than my attempt on my old Lian li. If you go into any cheapo pound store, they sell black engine spray paint, it is a perfect match to lian li's anodised black.

thanks, that half finished look was what i was going for :) I think the camera flash picks up the imperfections quite well.

cheers, the Dremel was not up to the job at all and now needs to be replaced. I'm glad i decided not to do a custom side panel... hmm... i might try a visit to the pound store although i've still got some MTN left.....

...

All in all i'm happy to take things slow but this little project is costing a pretty penny...i've ordered more fittings and cables at just under £100. I hate to add up everything on paper but cost is around £700 now :eek: eek eek haha.

my progress has been halted by family stuff and this little toy... predominantly the latter :D

DSC04693_zps2a33df36.jpg

Anyways, I’ve finally fitted both rads. I had a bit of a disaster with the front fitting and ended up scratching the rad with a sharp end of aluminium I didn’t file down... really annoyed with myself.

But, looking good so far:

i'm still not sure where to mount the pump....
