Hi All,

Picked up a second hand Mac-book pro the other week to replace my old tatty laptop for work, was a minter for its age, no scratches at all.

However, after it being on for a short period of time it starts to get very warm on the base, now im not doing anything that would overly strain the mac-book just simple internet browsing.

Is this a common thing with Apple mac-books or am i just being over cautious?

Kind regards,

Download smcFanControl and see what the temp gets up to and if the fans are spinning up (they normally only go full pelt above 90ºC or something).

I mean its not at the point where it burns to touch.. but it does seem to get extremely hot! Doesn't even sound like the fans are coming on!

Coming from an overclocker website everyone wants temperatures as low as possible. Which isn't possible if you also want quiet. It's one or the other. Macbooks tend to run warmer because they're designed to be quiet. The aluminium chassis also acts like a giant heatsink.

Yeah i did think that too, Its going to be warmer than a none aluminium casing! I think i will put up with it until it gets any worse.. Its definitely not loud so maybe its like you said! Warm and not loud..

Mine gets warm too. I think it has improved a lot in later models, especially with the better graphics cards/ssd drives.

I've found it's pretty much the case. I've had 2 MBP 17'' (a 1st gen Core Duo and a early 2011 i7). The first was dangerously hot. The second does get hot with not much coaxing. I've figured that it's a tradeoff in the design (like the fact that I only have a exhaust vent at the back of the machine which is hindered by the open screen) and that as a result will always run hotter than a comparative brand. Do yourself a favour and run it on a desk or one of those "lap protectors".

Yeah they do run hot, I've had a 9400/9600m and a 320m based machine and they both got ridiculously hot when you put the GPU under any kind of load.

But it's not surprising when you consider this is the cooling solution for CPU and GPU and in some cases chipset too.

No worse than any other laptop I have used. In fact when I do light work on my MacBook it barely gets warm to touch. Only games or other high intensity programmes send it into overdrive mode.

This. My 2011 quad only gets warm with all the cores and the discrete graphics going. Rest of the time you never notice.

Now the original 2006 MBP ... that would get hot and leave red marks on my legs even when surfing the net.
