I've noticed in most builds, people seem to be recommending the retail rather than OEM for this processor.

Is there really any difference apart from the fact that the retail comes with the stock heatsink (which generally isn't required, because again, most builds include a 3rd party cooler)?

6 quid price difference isn't a lot, unless it's for nothing! :p

You also get three year warranty with retail and fancy box.

If there is only a few pounds difference I always spec retail cpus.

Get retail...my 2600k died and was replaced no hassle by intel with only days left on warranty....def worth the extra...plus £6 for a spare cooler isn't too bad for emergency use :)

Oem ones are used in the systems that ocuk sell and they take all the best ones to put in them.

I'd buy OEM if the price difference was 20% and more.

given warranty, spare cooler and price difference usually around 5%, there's really no reason to buy anything other than retail.

This isn't true. Saying stuff like this may get you banned, and rightly so.

As for to op question. I'd go retail with this type of chip if the saving means something to you.

Only chips that your planning on OCing hard would I go retail, as you can buy the intel OC replacement warranty.

What? Where does it say that. Im pretty sure they wouldn't use retail cpu's in there systems, otherwise they would end up with a load of stock coolers. They must get the best ones somehow because they sell 4770k's clocked at 4.6ghz and 4.8ghz and not many will do that at all.

They can't test OEM's and then resell the OEM's.

I was under the impression that they did use the OEM's in the systems they build though, so it's not that they take the best, they just take them to use for the system builds?

They must bin because there have been pictures of CPUs with oc'd speeds on their brown boxes but as to whether they bin and put the crap clockers back on the tray is another matter

To my knowledge there are no stock coolers that come with the 2011 Sockets only the 1150 ones? Not sure why tho?

2011 are expected to have alternate cooling, they're not mainstream chips. Does seem slightly odd, but I guess it'd be pretty weird to buy a 2011 chip and then use a stock cooler (I assume the stock cooler would fit a 2011 board but have not checked, perhaps that's a reason?)

I think its something to do with the dimensions of the sicket, but also they come with a back plate that no other cpu socket comes with (other than the older generations like the x58).
