Hey guys, just asking you lot with more experience than me for a heads up.

I've just purchased a nvidia GTX 580 GDDR5 1.5 sparkle for £40 from a friend.

Had a GT 640 gigabyte in before.

My rig is;

Asus P5N-D
C2Q Q9550 OC @ 3.25 (so far)
4x DDR2 PC6400 nvidia SLI OCZ 8GB (5-4-4 15 @ 2.1v)
1x 1TB barracuda SATA II @7200
1x DVD/CD burner +/-
1x GTX 580 GDDR5 Sparkle edition 1.5GB
Coolermaster GM-Series 650W Semi Modular 80+ Bronze Power Supply

Also any ideas if the rig will be okay for recent games :)

Many thanks.

*EDIT* my old PSU COOLER MASTER iGreen Power 500 RS-500-ASAA 500 Watts Continuous, I kinda know I couldn't use it with the GTX 580.

Welcome to the forum.:)

Psu is fine, yeah should get decent settings game dependant.

You can try running your 640 as a dedicated Physx card in supported titles-should give you more fps as it will free up your 580.

Thanks for the welcome and the information :)

Is it really worth me doing that?

Just been researching about physx and dedicated cards etc, that video posted many times, that unfortunately didn't help. As immediately I thought yeah good idea. Sick man ;)

Then just came to me, if PhysX usually uses CPU's over a second dedicated GFX card, mine a 775, would the 640 be better for it than an "i" series CPU?

I'll give I ago and test just for "sharts and laughs"

With a 580 I wouldnt bother using it as a dedicated physx card the 580 will handle it fine. Its not worth the bother.

Np.

We are talking gpu PhysX titles-apex smoke etc, think Batman titles and Metro, they use 'proper' gpu PhysX not cpu PhysX.

The 580 can do PhysX on it's own with a performance hit on the fps, you could negate that performance hit with the 640 as dedicated PhysX, you are on an older rig where fps count, you could be throwing away extra fps when using the 640 as dedicated PhysX, or it's going to do nothing(but I doubt it) it's free to try as you already have it-nothing to lose and possible extra performance to gain.

You know what I had no idea on what it was worth, just had a look for how much a refurbished one is actually going for, minimum is £160 - £166,

I hope he's still a good friend and sincere ;) the joys of having good friends lol.

Today sometime my PSU will arrive and I can test the performance on games, I guess I'll notice a lot of improvement from my GT 640 to the GTX 580, can't wait to actually have a half decent gaming rig.

I'm not done yet, new gaming case. SSD and a water cooler CPU cooler is next on my list :)

Lastly a new MOBO, i7 and RAM (16GB) after that :)

Just quickly tested the card with the rest of my rig, I don't feel it's all working as good as it could. Maybe if I over clock the card and CPU,

My guess is because of the LGA 775, P5N-D and DDR2 RAM, being obsolete and all,

Maybe I'll have to hurry up and save for a new mobo, RAM and CPU to get sect gaming results?

Had a quick 20 min game, settings on med-high, fps about 30-40 max, usually it's on v.low-low settings, fps 25-35,

Game is DayZ standalone, I will try Rome II total war later on :)

Might just be DayZ, new update today and it's still in alpha, or my rig alone :p

Very true, I will a game of Rome II total war this evening when the baby and other half goes bed, I'll check results with a bench mark too as I also recorded my old GPU,

Just wish I could afford, this month a new MOBO, i7 and RAM :s
