This car is now sold..

This annoys me too - similarly to the adverts where they deliberately put incorrect mileage/cost or even a completely different car in the search criteria and then put the correct details in the advert description.

Here's a hint Mr Car Dealer; if I wanted a brand new 2 door BMW for £40k, I would, surprisingly enough, have put in the search criteria for a brand new 2 door BMW for £40k.

As it is, I'm searching for a £3k Ford Focus, so I'm not going to click on your advert.

Also, anyone who IS looking for a brand new 2 door BMW for £40k isn't going to see your advert, as they'll be searching for a brand new 2 door BMW for £40k, not a £3k Ford Focus. ****ing moron.

Putting PCM prices in adverts is now the done thing for used dealers as it bumps you to the top of autotrader listings, same for showing cars that are already sold but not taking them down as the hard part of motor sales is getting someone on the phone, once you are speaking to someone you know they want to spend money and your task then becomes interesting them in what you have.

Private sellers have no reason leave adverts up though.

Except that someone looking for a £500-2k car isn't going to be interested in one that costs half that every month, and someone looking for a £300/month car is going to have filtered out everything below ~£5k

Its just a way of getting ahead of your competition which is now being used by every trader and his dog, also, Autotrader in particular are about to start clamping down on it.

It works, that's why they all do it :)
