Just out of curiosity ; If a police officer pulls you for speeding and doesn't have the speed equipment installed in his/her car for proof of evidence i.e dog unit; do they have the right to take your dash-cam away from you and use that as proof?.

Don't think theres a straight forward answer to that one, in some circumstances the contents of a recording from a dash cam could be used against you.

Given that people have been prosecuted via You Tube video alone, I would be inclined to say most definitely yes if they stop you in the act.

Speeding might be hard to prove but driving without care I should imagine would be easier..

Don't know about the legality of seizing it, though I would imagine if they had reasonably suspicion you'd been naughty they probably can?

I can't imagine its any different to any other surveillance type footage. If they suspect it can be used as evidence it can be seized.

As mattyfez said, proving speed with enough precision might be difficult, but being charged with dangerous driving or driving without due care would be easy.

I doubt they could get you for speeding unless your cam is an accurate speed measuring device, or you've got your speedo clearly in shot. I can see a traffic cop trying it on, but if you went to court and asked the police to tell you exactly how fast you were going based on your film and their guestimate, they'd look a bit silly saying "fast, but I don't know how fast".

However, if they've got film of you driving like an idiot, crossing solid lines, overtaking at zebras and so on, they'd do you for that instead, regardless of your speed.

Would they not need a warrant to collect evidence. A warrant that has to get there before the delete button get pressed or the SD card gets swapped

Next up, dash cams that upload to your phone/cloud storage via Bluetooth/rf/whatever

"this SD card in your cam is empty"

"yes officer, I neglected to turn the camera on today".
