Corsa just doesn't sit right with me for a teenage boys car -probably just me lol

Hah! Sounds like an Almera is a bad call then :)

The short-list currently consists of:
- Lupo
- Polo
- Yaris
- Clio
- Fabia
- Fiesta 02 onwards
- 206

Which are all 4* NCAP, small engined yet "fun". 16v Clio is the top runner at the moment I think...

Done any insurance quotes for the clio or anything in list yet? That may help narrow your selection. (I am aware cars in list are all similar class, but the randomness of insurance makes it valid I feel)

Saxo isn't a bad choice.

Small engine will keep running costs and insurance costs down and they are quite light so nippy cars. Never tried a 1.6 but can imagine they would be fun.

What is the insurance like on a Mini One? When I checked it wasn't a lot more than my 1.2 Polo despite being a 1.6.

There are plenty floating around with optional alloys which have been made up to look like Coopers. Pretty cool first car I think. They do have their issues though, so there are a few things to look out for when buying.

Cinquecento Sporting.

Maybe a Ceicento

Lol! :D

I'd personally rather take the train.

In fact, if someone offered me a lift in one i'd still take the train. :p

I have no street cred but I'd rather not sink into negative figures.

Why? because it doesn't have 2000bhp and doesn't look like a race car?

The Cinq Sporting is a ridiculously usable fun car, I have had more fun in one then cars with 10000x more the power.

Apologies for abandoning this thread, I got suspended for what seemed like eternity grr!

Decision was made on a 16v Clio, found a nice one lady owner in great condition not too far from home... then my parents got involved and gave me a good telling off for such a stupid idea.

They think if he get's his freedom he's going to become a criminal junkie like his Dad. Well, they say he may end up hanging with the wrong people blah blah - I basically said they know he's nothing like his father, he's a smart, nice, polite kid without a bad bone in his body, also that his in and out "curfew" will not change simply because he gets a car, that's down to our grandparents (who he lives with) and they hardly ever let him out the house as is, the poor kid.

Their other reasoning was that he is guaranteed to crash because he's a kid. I explained about the insurance tracker box thing and how this will keep him grounded, the car is safe and slow, he will be learning to drive in it so will respect it from day one etc.

I tried my best to fight his case but nope, not allowed... so next year for his 18th I'm just going to keep quiet and buy him one anyway, he'll have been learning/driving for a year and I know he's a good kid so will be safe and fine.

Bloody irrational parental fears!

Ah thats a shame.

It's nice that you are like that for your cousin though. His father may have turned out to be a scumbag but its good that you are looking out for him.

Have you considered taking him out with you in your car? maybe give him some experience or even just a good day out with his cousin. He might appreciate that too.

Yeh we used to quite a lot before I moved away, I guess that's partly why I like to spoil him now. I'll be taking him out soon as his provisional comes back and start teaching him the basics whenever I can. I actually think he'll be just as happy with an xbox this birthday, I guess.
