hello Motors, I return for another spec-me

4 years ago (almost) you helped me pick my current car, an E92 335i (link to that thread)

Loved every minute of having it, and still do, but I feel the need for a new motor. I think was quite quite lucky, the 335i had just 13k on the clock and was 3 years old at the time and has served me exceptionally well. I don't think anything's gone wrong with it at all (I didn't even buy a 3rd party warranty ). It's now almost 7 years old and still only has 53k miles but I fancy a change.

So, my new spec is as follows:
4-door or even estate, as the family will be growing
no less performance (or maybe near the same) as the 335i
no more than 3 years old preferably
comfy for the occasional long trip, eg 3-4 trips of 300 miles per month, but not a barge please!
budget 15-20k plus what I can get for the 335i

what do you recommend?? :p

What's your 335i worth? I presume well north of £10k?

I'd look at a 535i Touring, if you can find any :p

not sure what the 335i would go for, and it depends if I sell privately or dealer, maybe £12k??
I like the 5 series but do I stand any chance of a 3 series touring (new shape) in my budget?

Last year I went from an E92 330i to XF S. Its the 3.0 twin turbo diesel model.
I got it because I wanted better performance and more room for family/childseats. Its been brilliant so far. No issues, wheras the E92 gave me no end of issues.
The XF is a very different drive, but the XFR might be worth a drive if you want it a bit more balls out.

I'm sort of worried about the opposite scenario, going from trouble-free motoring to a jag, or other make, and getting problems
I know most of the time this is just bad luck and not a manufacturer problem but even with a warranty etc I would regret it

The XF is very well received all round. Not to mention you get a MUCH nicer dealer experience too. BMW were usually ok, but Jaguar always seem to treat me more like a person than a walking wallet.

If that was your only worry, you really have nothing to worry about at all. The XF comes top of reliability surveys and customer satisfaction surveys.

The XF is a class act (to quote the article above).

[Jag, I hope you are reading this, i want my usual fee]
