Was thinking of getting a Radeon 290 with a custom EK waterblock.. I was under the assumption I'd need a reference card but is this not the case? Becuase there don't appear to be any.

Sorry for small hijack here, but how do you get the basket contents with links etc?

I am sure I remember someone made something to do it some time ago (though I could be wrong) but for the life of me can find no reference to it, if it even exists...
 
Look in the mm buddie - I bagged a 290 reference for only 220 (still some more available!) and an EK block for an additional £45 only a couple of weeks ago.

thanks.. but are the PCBs these cards based on the reference design and therefore the waterblocks?
 
whichever card you opt to buy, its best checking EK's waterblock page to check which block fits which card:

i was in the same situation as you when buying a graphics block with my card... and with mine, which is a reference design Gigabyte 290, the FC290X block fits
