TV For next gen consoles?

Any reviews on this http://www.johnlewis.com/panasonic-...-42-with-freeview-hd/p231889200?colour=Silver

? Ideally I'd like to spend around 400 quid on 42"... But it seems to cost way more than 32" models! (can get a new Samsung for 250 quid)

Also is gaming with 3d getting scrapped?

(I don't need any of the smart features or even freeview lol

To be honest, i've tried quite a few games on TV's in 3D and didn't really enjoy it.

Firstly, you have to either compromise the framerate or resolution.

TV's can only output 1080p 3D at 24hz.

The alternative is to play 720p at 60hz, but then everything looks pretty 'muddy' anyway.

On my 55" Panasonic VT50 I tried: Hitman Absolution, Doom 3, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Tomb Raider and preferred all of them in 2D...

Yeah I figured 3d isn't a big deal, I'm Surprised that many games do it!

Not sure what to get in 42" range, I'll be getting at John Lewis tho as I can get a staff discount. Paying over 500 seems mad tho!

Why? Just colour depth? How does panasonic/Samsung fair?

input lag

ideally you want to ask or look at threads on avforums asking the exact same thing.

Sony make the best gaming tv's currently available simple as that.

Panasonic are king of plasma which are now EOL and no longer widely available if at all, they are mediocre at LCD's.

Samsung have the best smart system but inferior panels in LCD market to Sony, their plasma's however are very good and worth the cash, this never used to be the case though 3+ years ago but their new plasma panels are very good, again I think they are also EOL and very hard to get a hold of.

If you want a TV for gaming nothing will touch a Sony LCD apart from a Panasonic Plasma

http://www.avforums.com/forums/which-tv-should-i-buy.367/

look at how many people recommend the sony well for everything now, it's the best gaming TV and TV in general now

Interesting, however I've never noticed input lag on my 7 or 8 year old Samsung lcd so I don't think it will be the be all and end all (especially when measured in milliseconds)

here you go

http://www.johnlewis.com/sony-bravi...tv-42-with-freeview-hd/p1169287?colour=Silver

"it’s the supreme gaming responsiveness on their 1080p HDTVs that generated the most interest among TV buyers who do their research"

"Input lag (high-speed camera) 6ms compared to lag-free CRT in [Game] mode
Leo Bodnar input lag tester 14ms in [Game] mode
Full 4:4:4 reproduction (PC) Yes, in [Game] and [Graphics] modes"

"The AUO-sourced VA-type panel implemented on the Sony KDL-42W705 delivered deep blacks by LED LCD standards"

"Backlight uniformity was good on our KDL42W705 review sample – we noticed no clouding or backlight bleed even before calibration. Due to the way a limited number of LED bulbs mounted along the edges are required to illuminate the entire LCD screen, some dirty screen effect (DSE) was inevitable (as is always the case on edge LED televisions), but this rarely troubled us in real-world viewing."

"The combination of deep blacks, neutral greyscale, relatively accurate colours and ruler-flat 2.4 gamma resulted in a superb high-definition picture that would give even flagship LED TVs a run for their money. The linear 2.4 gamma in particular injected plenty of “pop” and richness to every type of material displayed on screen, with a realistic rise out of black that did not muddy shadow detail. 1080p/24 content like Blu-ray discs were handled impeccably by the Sony W705, with nary a hint of telecine judder."

"Boasting the lowest input lag we’ve ever recorded, and also full 4:4:4 reproduction in [Game] mode, the Sony 42″ W7 is an ideal large-sized display for both console and PC gamers. Our Leo Bodnar input lag tester gave a reading of 13.5ms, eclipsing the previous best of 14.6ms set by another Sony HDTV, the KDL42W653."

"Furthermore, [Game] mode offers two presets, namely [Game-Standard] and [Game-Original], the latter of which can be configured to provide a less garish and more accurate colour palette for playing games on the Bravia KDL-42W705B."

"From our tests, it seems that the Sony Bravia W7 is the new W6. Featuring deep blacks, mostly accurate colours, 2.4 gamma, and above all record-breaking gaming responsiveness, the KDL-42W705 should prove to be a hit among movie and game enthusiasts who don’t need 3D. It even improves upon the popular, outgoing KDL-42W653 by offering two extra HDMI ports.
It’s early days yet (since this is the first and only television we’ve reviewed in 2014), but we’re calling the Sony KDL42W705B the gaming TV to beat for the year ahead. If you’re looking for an ultra-responsive display to be paired up with your PS4 or Xbox One, that’s capable of delivering lush images yet is still affordable, then the 42-inch Sony W705 deserves a place on the top of your shopping list (and in your living room)."

That TV reviewed is the same one John Lewis are selling even though the model numbers don't match up.

Why don't they match up? Well John Lewis are ********* they have asked sony to produce the exact same tv for them but to change the model number so that they don't need to price match anyone.

Basically they have cottoned on to the fact smart people buy from them and price match cheap stores which they have to match as per their guarantee.

So from now on expect John Lewis to sell tv's you have never heard (by model number) of but look the exact same as the tv's in every other showroom.

So you can tell it's a new sony by the design (the stand mainly as that usually changes every year).

Ah that sucks was hoping to price match then get staff discount after that...

Is the TV you posted particularly better than? (and has this model no. Changed?)

Don't think I want to pay the 100 quid extra..

Edit :realised it's 2" smaller but what's that amongst gents :p

I cannot find reviews for that tv on avforums, hdtv test (which are the top 2 tv reviewers on the planet, I wouldn't trust any other source) or in fact any site out there.

there isn't even a thread about it on avforums.

i did find the model number on the official sony site so the model number has not been changed. usually this suggests it is a budget model when absolutely no info can be found therefore i wouldn't go near it personally.

it is an inferior tv, you would be mad not to spend the extra £100 IMO after staff discount it will be less anyway so your talking about what? £80 more for a bigger TV (2 inches) and far better quality overall.

the TV I have suggested is the best one in it's price bracket, you would be mad to look at other options IMO or try and save money.

A TV should last you 5-10 years on average before you feel the need to upgrade. what is an extra £80 over 5-10 years? it's like £10 a year for a substantially better TV.

seriously buy the TV I have linked, if your still not convinced then read the full HDTV test review, they don't give many TV's the highly recommended award

if you want a cheaper TV then

The Sony KDL40W605B’s high picture quality and keen price should make it a popular choice among budget-conscious buyers. At this time of writing, its fiercest competition comes internally – for around £150 more, the Sony KDL42W705 offers a slimmer design, slightly larger screen real estate, and marginally lower input lag. For us, both TVs (and the Bravia W8 too) are excellent buys depending on your budget.

but John lewis don't stock it, so no staff discount therefore IMO your better off with the W705 again because of discount

again even HDTV test recommend the only TV's worth buying are Sony

"fiercest competition comes internally"

basically Sony are the king of TV's right now

better off doing that in the Home Cinema part of the forum, I'm sure a lot of people in there are interested in looking at the new Sony sets.

Also the extra 2 inches will be a lot better, I currently use a 50" panel and trust me bigger is better :p

Do you game at night or like to game in a dark room or watch movies with the lights off, etc? Then look into buying something like this "Antec SoundScience USB Powered HDTV Bias Lighting with 6500K Colour Temperature" ocuk sell them but I'm personally going with a competitor and a discount site.

Basically it helps prevent eye strain, connects to USB port on TV and is a nice cheap setup.

I had previously spent £25 on a really good setup but the cheap chinese PSU exploded and luckily I was in at the time and it didn't catch fire or anything.

So now I'm going with something safe and made to safety standards.

here is an old post of mine with a picture of BIAS lighting in work

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=24033359&postcount=59

it helps improve black levels too (picture quality).

i know it's another £15 on top to spend but your eyes will thank you for it if you ever use the TV at night or in darkness.

My KDL42W705B arrived yesterday, it was £549.99 from John Lewis, well it will be when i get the £50 back for the Richer Sounds price match.

I'm very happy with the purchase, a big improvement over the 32" LCD it replaced!

I never game with lights fully off (bad for your eyes) however that backlighting looks cool so I might buy :p.

Good to hear spaceman. I'll be coming from a 2008ish 32 inch Samsung.
