which is the more powerful gaming wise?? reason im asking as a friend has sold his 3 consoles and has about 1300 to spend on a gaming pc and wants it to be pretty much identical to mine and i was wondering if he would be better off with a single 290x or going crossfire with the same cards as i have??

not looking for the pros and cons of crossfire vs single cards just a straighht answer to whats more powerful

aye that would be great if you could. see he is pretty adamant that he wants his pc to be exactly the same as mine to the extent where he has offered to buy mine off me.

Ok, I'll run the 70's at Ghz speed and if someone could tell me what a 290 should be at to match a stock 290x, that'd be good.

Batman AO / Tomb raider / Sleeping Dogs ok for you?

Ed: I will add that Matt is right that he probably should be looking at a 290/x with a possible eye on xfire at a later date though.

I have got both (Matrix Plat 7970s to be exact) and it is a bit of a non contest, 280CF is noticeably faster.

Having said that my 7970s are sat in boxes at the moment doing nothing as 290X CF is a lot faster than 280X CF.

yeah they be ok

i told him that but he aint for listening tho i even told him to get a 290x and i would swap him cheekily

Tell you what, I could bench a couple of 7970's vs a 290 (at whatever is equivalent to 290x speed) if that's any use to you?

Some old numbers of mine from the Heaven 4 bench

Score 2100, GPU 7970 x 2 @1250/1850, CPU 3970X @4.9, Kaapstad

Score 1682, GPU 290X @1280/1625, CPU 4930k @4.7, Kaapstad

They are using slightly different clockspeed but the question was which is faster.

Aye, the lure of dual card pimpery is hard to resist.

So, about those 290 clocks... Anyone?

ed: I think kaap's results kind of speak for themselves, but I'm happy to run the benchies if you want.

I reckon you'll need around 1075/1250 with a 290 Pro reference to match a 290X @1000/1250. Assuming both cards have the same memory that is. If one has Elpida and the other Hynix add 25mhz on to the Elpida one.

Okey dokes Matt. Cheers :)
I believe all my cards are rocking hynix fwiw.

ED: ^ Never mind then :D I just thought you might want to see stock results rather than the wild OC benches in those threads.
