Living Idol and why?

Isn't Hitchens dead?

Hence, "honourable mention".

My living idol, this guy:

I've finally forgiven him for destroying the planet Pluto. :p

Honourable mention goes to this guy:

Try to idolise (actually use as role models, an idol is a very negative thing) people who have made genuine effort, fought against obstacles and hardships and succeeded through perseverance, strength of character and ingenuity. Not media made celebs who had it well just because of a natural talent (voice, looks, heritage) or people who were at the right place at the right time.

Nice work for telling people who to idolise

Maybe Attenborough for following his passion and creating the career of his dreams from it? I won't deny he's had some perks but you can't say he hasn't worked hard to get where he wants to be (without evidence to the contrary of course).

And maybe Stephen Fry for being a person who has been through a lot of crap and come out alright in the end? And for being a natural advocate for gay rights and general respect for humanity?

Maybe our definition of idolise is too vague? But people(well, I) consider having an idol as having someone whom you have a great deal of respect for and not necessarily have to be a role model as such(in my mind).

All I'm saying is many people have had plenty handed to them and it didn't work out so well. (E.g Shia LeBeouf)

I second Elon Musk, definitely my role model.

edit: the why.

He started with humble beginnings in the country that i grew up in and then went on to "invent" paypal and sold it. Instead of just sitting on his wealth and enjoying the luxuries of life. He set out to revolutionize the transportation industry and the energy industry. His philosophy and his attitude i find very inspiring.

Honourable mention ! Not the Idol. pffft

I'm not sure what you're talking about but the thread is about living idols, not sure why you'd post a dead person when surely if that was the point then the thread wouldn't have specified that the person has to be living. You can keep your rolleyes btw. :p

My interpretation is you post a "living idol" who obviously still has to be alive because of the word "living", and an "honourable mention" who doesn't.

You're boring me now. As you are well aware the OP included an honourable mention with no caveats on them being alive or dead. If you are unable to grasp this simple premise then I can't help you.

You must have imagined this part seeing as the honourable mention in the OP is another person who is alive. But living in Darlington I'm sure this is the most excitement you've had in months so carry on.

Honourable mention could just be your second choice of living idol, seeing as the thread title specifically mentions the fact they have to be alive, and the OP listed another living person as the honourable mention.

Okay fine, you go ahead and do whatever you want. It's an internet forum thread, so I hardly think it's worth getting sidetracked by such minutiae as whether or not the honourable mention has to be alive or not.

My honourable mention was also a dead guy.
