280X CROSSFIRE VS 290X

whats the dif between hynix and elpida memory?? i noticed my cards had hynix which seems to be the preferred option

Hynix tends to overclock a bit better and is a little bit faster. However you can get Elpida that overclocks well as well, its just not quite as reputable as Hynix.

lol, if it makes you feel any better, I think one of my 7970's might be using Elpida. Makes no difference really, as it still pulls 1800+ :p

Either way

whenever i have tried to clock mine from the standard 1500 upto 1525 it crashes my pc straight away for some reason

Tried increasing memory voltage in afterburner?
Shouldn't really have to at those speeds tbh, but still.

ive noticed a few with 1750+ on the memory and im pretty sure my sons gigabyte 7970 is sitting at 1725 on the memory as well would need to ask him.

any tips on how to up the memory and is it actually worth messing with as i always thought it was the core that was used for speed and frames etc

Furthest I've dared is 1.619v I think. Should be ok at up to 1.625 afaik. Matt can probable advise you better here.

Not really worth trying too hard unless you're looking to squeeze out the last few drops when benchmarking tbh.

Lol. I love that little guy, bet hes hung like a stallion as well. Some people have all the luck. :p

Good advice. Memory gains aren't massive so id stick at 1.6v-1625v.

might give it a go later this evening see how i get on. what about the core volts what would be safe for them?? ive never moved from 1144 which im assuming means 1.144v

any reason why the 7990 is ahead in everything bar company of heroes 2

Didn't know, but a quick Google shows that the game engine is actually slower with 2 GPUs than 1, so Crossfire is automatically disabled for that game and so that bench is for 1 x 280X vs 1 x 290X. This negative scaling is fortunately not too common these days, but can still happen in some games and is complete pain for us dual GPU-ers.

Poor Matt. :D Does it help if I tell you both of my cards run Hynix too? ;)

im using 2 of these at the moment

In that case, go nuts :D

Assuming you have a decent amount of rad space, you're probably more limited by the cores OC capability than the temps they'll produce.

Bung it 1.250v to start with and see how high you can get the clocks. No need to pussyfoot here :D

Plenty o rad.

Start at 1200mhz and work your way up. Could just do as Matt says and stick them at 1.3v if you want tbh.

Fwiw, mine aren't the most awesome clockers, but they'll do 1250-1260 stable at about 1.288v.

I was leading up to that :D

Lol hes on water go wild in the isles i say. :D

Some 280X cards are volt locked these days i found. I tried editing a volt locked bios and had no joy. I can ask Kaboom about it if needed if robert has trouble.
