290x or 780ti - First world problems

I had a faulty 5870(gsod), a faulty 7950, two faulty 7970 Lightning BE' s, and now have two faulty 290s. Guess I'm just unlucky.

Probably. But I do remember MSI have a spat of bad HD7950/HD7970 cards while back, and now they have issues with their fans.

Between me and my mates(at least from memory) we have had at least one HD5770,two HD5850s,one HD5870,one HD6870,one HD7770,one HD7870,one HD7870LE/XT,two HD7950s,one GTX460,one GTX660(my current card),one GTX650TI Boost and a GTX660TI. My HD5850 was nearly three and half years old before I ditched it for my GTX660. Outside the MSI HD6870 failing(it works but it has display issues),the HD7870LE/XT is an XFX one which works OK,but has rather a meh cooler. Like I said I cannot vouch for cards over £250,as they were all under this.

Getting sick of people saying anyone who calls amd unreliable is a nvidia fan boy. .. press back 99% of all graphics card problems are amd. I've had 5 amd cards 3 died. Had 4 nvidia 0 died.

This is by far the most ridiculous comment in this whole thread.

Though i can agree Nvidia are generally more user friendly (though i have never had issues with either brand), we have seen RMA figures and GPU faults are there on both sides of the fence in relatively insignificant numbers.

Having consecutive/multiple faulty GPUs suggests you are unlucky, not that they are unreliable.

Take a batch of 10 or 20 GPUs and its still not enough to make an estimate on reliability.

GPU purchase decisions should be made on price, features and YOUR OWN peace of mind.

Well, if 4k gaming is your thing and your planning to stack up some serious GPU power, then the 6gb would certainly make a difference. Whether its worth it is up to you, its a fair bit of cash to invest!

This is ridiculous Humbug and Ranger . If the people that are highlighting AMD issues are fragrant defenders of Nvidia then fair enough as it takes two to tango and you're all bad as each other but if any of these guys experiences are true then you two are really embarrassing yourselves here. If it's a tit for tat thing then I apologise for pointing you two out.

While I've had more AMD cards than Nvidia, I've had zero issues with either company. They have all been plug 'n play, the only problems I have are ones that I create myself through trying new BIOS's, pushing the cards to the absolute limit for the first week. Now, this is great and dandy for me but if someone comes along and says "I've not had the best experience with AMD cards" and then goes on to list the problems had, what gives me the right to question the integrity of this person?. For all he/she knows, I might have been lying about my flawless experiences.

It's discussions like this that spiral into bad feelings between people and over what????. A graphics card manufacturer!. LtMatt knows where it's at as he is a tomato through and through but he is friendly. Gregster and Matt do lose their cool now and again but it's quickly rectified and both are man enough to admit it. Now I don't know about Ranger but I do about you Humbug and you need to stop being so personal. I think the majority of people here can see through the bull without the need of defenders in red and green capes turning up. So when you see some delightful person talking absolute garbage, let it be and give your opinion to the OP or part of the discussion and let people have their opinion as through everything, we all still prefer the same company we did years ago so all the talk about what benefits are to be had with AMD/Nvidia have not swayed one another one bit. It's partly the reason I don't hang around as much.

Short version, live and let be, your opinion will be respected more the better you handle yourself. Kaapstad, I've yet to see him butthurt about anything and always gives the best information he can. This place would be amazing with that mentality adopted.

To OP, best budget is 290, 290X/780 trades blows (from last time I looked many weeks ago) then it's the 780Ti. So if you would rather save a few quid the 290/290x 780(non Ti) are the best options but if you want the best, it's the Ti. Titan Black etc are better but by best I meant in the bracket you've set. Whatever card you get, I wish you the best with.

Avoid amd it's a cars equivalent to a Kia has all the bells and whistles but is as reliable as a broken ball sack. There's a reason nvidia are getting away with higher prices. .. you get the better product, this is true in all industries. Mobiles cars clothing. AMD SHOULD SHUT DOWN

AMD cards are a few girders short of an office block. That is the best way of describing it. Despite the usual deflections there are still a number of issues with the drivers but they're not difficult to overcome.

If you're staying on air, go for a reference Ti. Or, in fact a 290 Lightning...

Credit where it's due and I'll try not to exagerate, but the Lightning cooler is a masterpiece. It tames Hawaii like the dog whisperer, and frankly more people on air should be letting it rip. I've put 1.57v through it and I haven't seen the GPU or VRMS break 70c. I salute MSI. If you put that much juice through a reference 780Ti or even KPE on the air cooler it would fall over before you could say RMA Form.

Or you could just get a 780 and put it on water and have a completely hassle free silent experience :p

I dont care if your a Nvidia fan or not , But anyone in their right mind would realise AMD shutting down would cause stagnation in the GPU industry and way higher prices
AMD/Nvidia both users have had issues And you have to remember most AIB cards for both vendors are made in the same factory ,

Thanks for your constructive rant, i don't know what the problem is but its interesting to see that despite your high mindedness its effected you too.

People don't respect other opinions / experiences enough. I prefer Nvidia, but if someone has had issues with team green, I don't try to tell them different - especially with a sharp tougue. Currently an AMD 7970 user, too. :p

If you're going to post crap, please entertain us with your opinions why and not just a childish rant.

Op, either cards are awesome, 290x or 780Ti, neither are perfect, one is simple to use, powerful, but carries a high price.

The other is powerful, can require some fiddling to get it running as it should, but is priced lower.

if it were my money, it would go on 290 if you want 90% the performance and a nice saving to spend elsewhere, or if you can afford it, a 290X lightning.
