Just wanted to know guys what happens when you are about to sell your car but want to keep hold of your private plate to sell it personally.

Basically the car is my dads old Honda Civic 1998 and has a private plate on it. All the paperwork relating to the car including the V5 has it registered with the private plate. At no point was the original plate put on retention and he can't find any paperwork relating to the buying of the private plate (which he bought in 1995 and transferred over from another car).

So how does one go about getting the original reg S.... back on the car and then retaining the private reg to sell privately?

Many thanks for the help, I searched many threads and have sifted through the DVLA website but cannot work out what needs to be done.

Just fill out a form from the DVLA, nice and simple, nothing but your V5 and MOT required.

Many thanks...that has made it slightly easier to understand. :)

Another question, I doubt the number is worth very much to anyone (including my dad now it seems!) so not worth retaining it for £105/yr. Presumably one would have to pay £105 whilst looking for a buyer for it, even if it sold within the month?

That is right, or you can transfer it to another vehicle for £80 with no ongoing fees if you wish to keep it for the future.

Thanks....I think it might just be easier and more cost effective to sell the plate as part of the deal for the car and leave it on there.

What's the plate?

My wifes old car had W96 PDP which just came with the car and many people for some reason thought it was a private plate, I just let it go with the car when I part-ex'ed the car, even the dealer asked me if I was going to keep the plate.
