It’s the exotic fruit known for its sweet, perfumed flesh and is adored by top chefs such as Gordon Ramsay.

But mangos imported from India are set to disappear from our shelves amid fears that shipments contain a pest that could destroy British tomato and cucumber crops.

Well, not really as major as sensationalised by the news as we get loads of Mangos from South America and South East Asia, not just Indians.

I am in support of this if the pest is true, last thing you want is to ruin your home crops for some imported exotics.

And apologies for the joke, it's Sunday after all :)

the comments section made for more of a lol than the article:

We have nice English fruit, we should buy more of our own delicious goods

It's the people that need stopping, they carry worse diseases.

I think linking anything the DM claims to be journalism needs to be made a bannable offence

Bloody Indian Mango's coming to the UK taking work from good old British Mango's. Where's Nick & Nigel when you need them?

That's why I quoted what sufficiently summarised the article - I usually avoid DM links but it's about mangos, I just can't resist mangos.

Fair enough. Never let it be said that I stood in the way of a mango-loving man and his much-loved mangos.

Oh, I thought this thread was going to be about the demise of the traditional Indian run paper/corner shop. Seems the Turks have pretty much taken over, just as they have with the kebab shops.

I asked an Indian mate of mine and he hasn't got a clue either...

"Mangos will be burned in India because there will be no market for them"

The hell? How about distributing them to the millions of Indian villages living in poverty?

British tomatoes are garbage though, they don't grow enough good varieties because it would require a hydroponic grow house to do so year round.

They don't smell nor taste of tomato - no scent, and they just taste bitter.
