Currently have an Alfa Giullietta which is due for replacement at the end of August. Have enjoyed the engine on it but over the looks now and not the most comfortable inside plus the dealers are crap.

Need to order replacement within the next couple of weeks as I need to make sure I can get it 1 September to replace the one going back.

Looking at either a Golf GTD or a 120D M Sport for the replacement. I do about 20K miles per year mostly motorway driving. Had a quote for the Golf (Extras Metallic, Nav Pro, Keyless Entry, Winter Pack) and this was ok'd by my boss.

Waiting on a quote from the BMW (Estoril Blue, Comfort pack, visibility pack, Business Nav) but it would be missing a few things from the Golf, no keyless entry, basic Nav, no adaptive cruise control, front parking sensors. Most of these things I don't think will bother me. Main would be the Media system in the golf when specced as Nav Pro has 8inch touch screen, dual SD card slots etc.

The BMW would also cost me about £35 a month more in company car/fuel tax.

Anyone have any opinions on these options or other options? Not a fan of the new A3 looked at the A Class but the top diesel is only available in automatic and I think would be over budget, plus one of my bosses just got an A45 AMG.

I could have looked at a 318D or something but I don't have any need for anything bigger and have underground parking at my flat which isn't the most spacious

If you can get Adaptive Cruise on the Golf, go for it.
Pro Nav will be better than the boggo nav on the BMW as well IMHO.

Golf VII's a brilliant car and I wouldn't be disappointed to have one over a 120d.
Not having Keyless Go would probably annoy me and then there's the price difference.
 
I have cruise control on my current car and apart from testing it when I go the car, have never turned it on. I realise the adaptive cruise control is a different beast but is it that useful. I commute from Manchester to NUL so basically M6 19-16 and M56 where I spend a lot of time in heavy traffic so maybe that's why normal CC has been no use to me
 
I had a Golf with Active Cruise last year for a trip to Scotland (from the Midlands). It's an an amazing system that is so much more useful than standard cruise.

Sounds like the Golf would suit you better.
 
Yeah, Its what I was leaning towards - I went for a test drive in one a couple of weeks ago, just thought I should check some alternatives.

Need to decide on the colour as well. All the GTDs i see seem to be grey/black/white and but leaning towards the night blue, would prefer a lighter blue but you can only get that on the R.
 
CC is awesome when you need to give your legs a rest on a long journey, or for when you're watching the MPGs. Plus it is helpful during SPECS roadworks...
 
I use cruise all the time, even when I'm driving to work and back in relatively busy traffic so adaptive would be brilliant.

The mk7 is a nice all round car, the 1 series is seriously Fugly at the front - that would make the decision alone for me even without the extras.
 
You could probably work on the quote for the 120d and get it down a fair amount, most report 15% on list being very achievable. The point being you could then spec in the pro-nav and drive comfort.
I love CC and do most of my miles without a foot on the accelerator, that said adaptive would no doubt be even better.

Its going to come down to how you feel about each of the cars, both of them seem to have Marmite looks :)
 
Get Dynaudio upgrade on the Golf too, it's worth it.
The stock system (on the Mk6, anyway) is really rather good. Dynaudio is a pricey option, not sure if it's really worth it.
When we were sitting with the dealer speccing up a new Mk6, he even said not to bother.

Disagree, it's generally recognized as being one of the best option upgrades available on the market. Admittedly when stationary the difference is not major, as you say the stock stereo system is fairly decent but test drive 2 cars one with and one without and the difference is night/day when on the road.

Go for the Golf, I picked up a brand new MK7 GTI a couple of weeks ago. The quality of the MK 7 is remarkable, they are solid, lighter and just an all round better place to be.

The LED lights on the back are fantastic and the xenon’s again, are simply brilliant.

ACC is effortless. The car will control a set speed, come to a complete stop and resume in line with traffic if you have DSG. It can be used almost anywhere not just on the motorway. In addition, Front Assist will constantly monitor town driving and automatically stop the car between 5mph and 20mph is it suspects that you're about to rear end someone.

The normal Nav system comes with two SD card slots, only difference is the bigger, sharper screen and SSD HD.

They are also 5 groups cheaper than the previous generation.

Cheers for the help. I've got someone else quoting me for the Golf so if they come in cheaper I might be able to squeeze Dynaudio in
