My girlfriend is buying a Ford Fiesta. She commutes approx 150 km/week. We have narrowed down the choice to either a 1.0L Ecoboost Titanium 100ps or a 1.5L Titanium Turbo Diesel. Which would be the better choice ?

The petrol ecoboost is a very good engine. All the advantages of the diesel with none of the drawbacks.

I'm sure I was reading the back of a Ford brochure when at the garage recently while getting a new key sorted for our ancient Mondeo.

If I remember right the Ecoboost:

a) Has more BHP than the diesel
b) Has more torque than the diesel
c) Gets better MPG than the diesel
d) Has lower emissions than the diesel

Get the Ecoboost :)

I don't comment here usually but we picked up the 125ps 1l ecoboost and its a nice engine and quick. MPG wise don't beleive the stats we get about 40 mpg rather than the 62.5 the quote.

if you google 'ecoboost mpg' you'll be very surprised what most ecoboost owners say about MPG. basically its crap

I suppose because it's on boost all the time? Guess you cant have it both ways, if it was a lower spec turbo or n/a it would be slow and horrible.

That engine would worry the crap out of me. Technically it is cracking, but reliability is yet to be seen and some of the design choices shout "big bill coming" at me.

I had a little ecoboost for a few days last week and it averaged circa 40mpg too - even with me driving it...i.e not kindly.

No idea what version it was, be surprised if it was the 125, pleasing enough to drive though.

I'd say I would be worried about owning one down the line too, but if it's a new or nearly new car and will realistically only be owned a few years it should be fine.

I have the 125 focus and its plenty powerful enough, especially in low gears. I average around 40mpg. Around 43 when driving carefully. (not like a granny) that's on a new engine, don't know if it gets better bedded in. The focus has a 6th gear on the 125 which is needed
. At 70 it hits 2.5k revs

Took my dad's 14 plate Fiesta with Ecoboost up from Basingstoke to Mansfield and back, about a 350 mile round trip. He has the 100ps version which puts it roughly equivalent to a standard 1.4l petrol if I'm not mistaken. I'm not sure I'd want to go with the 80ps version personally.

It was pleasant enough to drive but the fuel economy wasn't as great as I was expecting - got 45mpg on the whole trip which is far from terrible but it's also quite a way off the official figures and puts it not substantially better than my 2009 1.6l petrol Fiesta which would have done around 39-40mpg on the same trip.

Still good engines though and I agree with what everyone else said in response to the original question - no point even considering the diesel when the Ecoboost is an option. That kind of mileage works out to less than 5k miles a year so it'll be perfect for that.

Wife has the Zetec S. After the first 2500 the average mpg she gets is around 43mpg with a mix of town and dual carriageway. If you keep the revs low then low 50mpg is easy. I managed 63mpg out of it once...but that was a short journey in a 20 zone. :p
