Not where I'd like to be
I have a dilema. I want to go crossfire with my 290 and drive a 1440p monitor with that but I can only afford to buy one this month and the other either next month or the month after.

Now I am thinking that if I get the 2nd 290 now I will only notice FPS difference in my gaming and I'm not actually struggling there as it is at 1200p. If I get the monitor on Crysis 3 and Metro Last Light, still in my library to play once I complete Metro 2033 which I am close to the end, will need to be dropped in detail at 1440p with one 290.

So which first, 2nd 290 or a 1440p monitor. Damn I hate this kind of decision.

That's a tricky one my friend, for me at least. I think id go for the 1440P screen first, as long as i knew some crossfire goodness was coming soon. Reason being, you'll see and feel the difference once you add that second 290. At 1200P the difference (while still noticeable) will not be as pronounced. Whenever i go back to single card im like, where have all my fps gone? Could never go back to single card any more.

I expect other people will suggest the opposite and rightly so. To be honest its a good place to be in and i don't think you can go wrong either way.

I actually had a 7950 with plans to eventually get 2 290s and I still bought the 1440p monitor first. Before my first 290... I was able to run games at high and that alone was worth the jump. Once I got my 290 I made the jump to ultra settings with AA turned down in high end games. Now I have my 2nd 290 and everything is through the roof :)

I say go with monitor, it is definitely worth the jump even without AA. (only in the most demanding games)

As I said, for me, with a 7950 the jump was worth it. So with the 290 alone it definitely is.

+ 1 on the monitor first, i bought a Dell U271hm 9 months ago and i still love it, best purchase i've made imho.

Always go with the monitor first and then figure out what is needed to run it.

Even a 4K monitor can be run at 1080p while sorting out GPUs to use with it.
