As the title really - I'm looking to replace my ageing E83 X3 with something newer, more economical fuel wise, bigger and with more toys.

So my mind went to an X5 (circa 2010 model) or an X6.

Thoughts / advice / comments etc. What options are worth looking out for and what is a waste of time and all that.

Open to alternatives of course :)

X5 yes, X6 no.

I just don't get the X6 at all. It does the same job as the X5, yet costs more money and is ugly as hell.

I like the X5 though; if I were ever in the market for a 4x4/SUV it would be on my shortlist.

if you want a 4x4 that works, forget the X6 although I personally in M spec looks fantastic, arguably one of the best looking 4x4's... however it's useless lol.

I was looking at X5's... but the running costs are expensive and the badge put me off... however...

Does it have to be a BMW I'm assuming?

The trouble with the X5's is they are always big money for what is generally the oldest car in the range, ie, the last to move to new platforms. So a £30k+ X5 is still basically an SUV version of the old E60. Same goes for the X6, even more so - the X5 has now been replaced but the X6 is still available brand new for a huge sum of money complete with instrument binnacle from a 10 year old 5 Series, well, sort of :p

The last time I looked at an X6, the official fuel economy given was 25mpg at best so it's not very economical! Plus IMHO they're one of the ugliest cars on the road.

Agreed with Fox. They are generally the last model to be updated, so you really do pay more for an updated version as they are newer.

Moreover, the X5 isn't really any bigger than a 5 series. I did look at the X5 before buying the 5 series and the boot was really disappointing. The 5 series F11 has every bit as much space, that I noticed, as an X5. The only thing you are gaining is height and weight, and paying extra tax and purchase cost, fuel consumption etc... with it. The X6 is even worse as it has even less room, and if fugly as fug.

Of course, maybe you actually need 4wd (I get by fine with winter tyres on my previous 3 series and current 5 series, semi-rural Scotland), in which case, get a new Range Rover (Sport of Full Fat). They are MUCH bigger, and better in every way. Even my P38 used to lord it over X5's and the like whenever I passed them.

TDLR:

If you need a 4x4, get a Range Rover
If you don't get a 5 series.

For some reason I LOVE the look of the X6, not sure exactly which guise (probably m-sport) but with the right kit it can look epic!

Sure, it's big, expensive and pointless but I still love it. Not sure I'd ever own one though, would probably go for Range instead.

Got an E70 3.0sd (then called 35d) Sport. Can carry a lot of kit, tows brilliantly, handles well and can shift. Gearbox could be better but that's the only gripe I have. Almost 70k now and touch wood, has been faultless in my ownership.

You need to drive one to get it. Suits the driving and towing I do perfectly. I preferred it to the RRS.

I agree with this, yet everyone else seems to think I'm mad.

I looked into the 5 and quickly dismissed it for reason Fox gave. The platform is pretty much a generation behind.

Cheers for the input boyos :)

As the OP says, it would be about 2010 model that I'd be looking at, so not brand new, which in turn means the likes of a brand new model RRS is kinda out of the question!

Comparable vehicles seem to be the older model RRS, maybe a 2009 model, overall better off road by far, which isn't really that much of a plus for me, but they are heavier and slower too, with the mpg reduced.

I have driven these all, and I still can't decide :(

However the other part of my question stands - what toys / options are worthwhile on the X5 or X6 ?

Also does anyone know when the newer style idrive was fitted to each of these models?
