Unsociable gardeners?

The gardeners tending the communal gardens for the flat I live in are driving me nuts.

I work nights and generally don't get in till 5am. Lately they have taken to mowing, shredding and leaf blowing from about 7:30 am.

This morning the industrial shredder was stuck directly outside my bedroom window. They were all finished up and gone by 8:30.

I appreciate everyone has to make a living but is this really a reasonable time to start loud machinery?

I phoned my landlord who couldn't really give a darn. I think they pay peanuts to them so they slot the job in either very early or when it is tipping down with rain.

Is there any rules or guidelines to this kind of noise?

Personally I wouldn't make any noise like that until after 9.00am but there won't be any rules about it.

People work all hours these days so you'll likely always be disturbing someone.

The majority of people are up at that time for 9-5 grind, not their fault that you don't fall in to that group.

I used to work for an independent gardener/landscaper and we would have to get through a large number of council flat areas and old folks homes in a day. Unfortunately (for people having a lay-in) this meant we started working at 7:30/8am. Although I never saw anyone complain, there would usually be an abundance of women offering us coffee and biscuits.

Yeah I appreciate that. I am just like a bear with a sore head as I can't get back to sleep.

I would much rather do a 9-5 but can't get one, so I am stuck 17:00-05:00. Well I say stuck, it is that or the dole and I am not going back to that again unless it is the last resort.

I used to work 12 hour night shifts, and could never sleep properly, even after 15 years. Its just one of the problems with working nights really.

As far as I'm aware, 7.30am is the legal earliest time for noise of this nature.

Unfortunately, you're the exception, being a night worker. Either speak to them kindly and ask if it's possible for them to do the work somewhat later in the morning, or deal with it.

I do feel your pain, though. I used to work night shifts, hitting the sack around 5am and noise from everywhere -- the street, neighbours etc. used to drive me batty.

Get yourself some ear buds. I also found having an oscillating desk fan on full speed helped lull me off and keep me under.

Sounds like a setup for a 70's sex comedy

When I was living up London in Kings Cross we lived near a new development and they were not allowed to start construction until 9am which I thought was reasonable.
However if you are not getting to sleep until 5am then even a reasonable start time like this isn't going to help much.

Your best option is:
