I just want to play my game

The thing that gets me is having to sit through all the crap just to play the game. Launch Steam/Uplay/Origin, click on game, go through countless dev/game studio splash screens and then finally start game. It's no better when you call it a day and want to exit the game. Hit escape, quit, are you really sure you want to quit, yes, at games selection screen, press exit to desktop, are you really really sure you want to exit to desktop, aaaaaarrrrrgggggghhhhhhh ffs yes!!!! I just want to be able to play and exit my games. I don't need asking multiple times.

There is always a way of getting rid of those splash screens, either in the ini files or adding something like '-novid' to the startup properties of the game in Steam or Origin. None of my installed games have splash screens! Straight to game menu :)

What's with all these people forgetting passwords, anyway?
Do you not pick anything memorable, or keep them written down with reminders in some cryptic format, or anything?

Indeed.
Monkey Island II was on 11 floppy disks on my Amiga, and didn't install to hard drive. You had to swap the disks nearly everytime you changed areas.
Monkey Island 2 did install to HD on Amiga I used to play it that way! Still have the original Amiga game & box as well ;) All the Lucasfilm/Lucasarts adventures installed to HD on Amiga as did the Sierra adventure games.

Ah of course. It's really that simple everyone!

it does help though, 40 meg and i've never really had issues with this.

have had some fun issues, weirdly origin isn't too bad, seems to just accept the existance of my steam library and includes games that they do, so i can launch from either.

uplay is bad though, i have ac2, ac3, ac4 and ac revelations on steam. unless i launch via steam uplay hasn't the foggiest reccolection i even own them.

only grief i have with steam is the limited downloads [cmon, 6mbps cap!? :p ] and the constant boot updates, fine on the big rig but between steam and origin i get a glorious 3-4 mins of unusability on the laptop when i boot up.

as for passwords, i'm one of those people who tries to keep one password, but then its "is the number after 1, 2 or 3?" or "did this one ask for caps and numbers so i use my other password for that"... its like that for everything though and usernames too. pain in the backside, although i suppose if i can't even remember them they must be hard to crack.

I HATE uplay and Origin....

Steam is good, happy with steam, it auto updates without even asking.

Uplay, you install a game and you open it, patch it, close it. Open it again, patch it again, close again. You have to keep doing it until it's updated. Try uninstall Blacklist and reinstall. Takes an AGE updating it because of the backwards updating uplay does.

Origin... I don't think I've ever got BF4 to work for a week solid... I always, ALWAYS have an issue with it.

Someone has a short memory, to claim the good old days of PC gaming were better is total nonsense. They weren't, I remember C64 tape decks and endless watching the counter creep slowly round only for it to crash two clicks before it loaded.

PC gaming has never been better.

The Amiga 500/600/1200 didn't come with a hard drive.

It was a (very) expensive optional upgrade at the time.

Agree with this. On 100mb fibre, it doesn't matter if they auto update and I'm playing a game online as I never even realise. Its how I've always imaged the service to be, yet the internet connection was the key to achieving it.
Even on 40mbit it is fine :)

It is also great having fast internet in that you can download a game whilst playing another online multiplayer game with no sacrifice!

What I do hate however is these programs like Origin who call home with all your information so they can sell it - then you spend an additional £100 to play the game (BF4 + premium) and it doesn't even work!

When I turn off my PC windows won't let me because Origin is still running and refuses to close so I have to hard-reset my PC to turn it off :/

I have thousand or so games on floopy/cd/dvd now even thou I love to collect them and it gives me pleasure to have something Physical I see the merits in having stuff on steam

Pros -
- Having all games safe guarded [meaning if something like a fire or ur pc get hit by a meteor ] you can always get them back
- No worry about losing your cd keys
- Game can be cheaper as its just digital

Cons -
- No Physical item
- No nice smell of new =]
- Some older games have DRM build in that is not compatible with win 7 or 8
- Not the latest version

I use win 8.1 and before GFWL goes offline I wanted to play bulletstorm so I have it on steam and DVD so I got out the dvd thinking it would be easier as I was downloading some other games on steam after 10mins of installing the game didn't register with windows so by then I just downloaded it on steam and it worked first time :) downloaded over 12 games that day and they was not indie games part from dungeon defenders

Could not agree more with this, PC gaming is by far the best it has ever been without question.

I seriously cannot get over the amount of people that moan about Steam (admittedly no experience with Origin) it is simply the best thing that has ever happened to PC gaming and I have had it since the very start. I have never had a single problem even at the launch of HL2.

I understand Steam is still a money making machine but I believe they create a great balance between doing just that and ensuring the consumer gets a great product. Compare that to EA who are just take take take and you have the reason I don't have Origin and haven't bought a Fifa game in years.

Steam the best thing ever? Nah don't thinkso.

I was locked out of steam for 4 days last week because of steamgaurd refuses to send me the code to utherise the machine that has been running the program for the last 2 years. It finally emailed me the code yesterday. The most annoying part is that customer support to this day havnt replied to my 6 emails and tweets.

never had a problem with steamguard but then I have a private email server
only thing I had a problem with is with origin and Iwas unable to login for 2 months because a server was blocking me but thats sorted now.

Steam with Origins customer service response would be the best thing ever.

I love steam, but they do fall down when it comes to the customer service aspect (refunds, issues etc)

I recall the days when you had to identify an aircraft silhouette out of the manual to run a Microprose flight sim, or playing Frontier Elite II landing on a planet or space station you would be prompted to enter a phrase from the manual.

In that respect Steam et al are probably better but it is annoying when you get the "Internet Error" message. However sometimes it is game related - people on a train sim forum the other day were complaining they couldn't get on to play TS2014 (aka Railworks), but I got straight into Skyrim. I normally find if you get that message, start Steam on its own and run the game from within the jacket rather than its own shortcut usually works.

The alternative to Steam is pernicious and nasty disc based DRM (Securom or Starforce) the latter I won't let anywhere near the PC, even if it means depriving myself of otherwise good games.

I know what you mean. I re-installed FarCry 3 and it means that when I launch it, I have it, uPlay and Steam running at the same time. Completely unnecessary and the uPlay adds absolutely nothing.

It seems that the general problem some have with Steam, Origin and Uplay is that they personally have a slow internet connection which is not a problem with Steam, Origin or Uplay in the first place. I have a 60mb cable line and Steam, Origin and Uplay all max it out when downloading. Pretty efficient services if you ask me.

I don't remember the really old days, but I remember pre/early-Steam and it wasn't good. Having to search the internet to find patches and stuff for your games? No thanks, it was terribly manual.

I think if you did a survey, the majority of people would have no issues with any online service. You also have to remember that these services are free to use and require no subscription fees unlike other online services. Since I've used Steam (September 2003) I've had literally no problems worth crying about. The only problem I had was Bioshock Infinite wouldn't run whilst in online mode, so I got a refund. Some people registered last year and claim they've had nothing but trouble; I call BS personally :p
