Hey guys,

I've recently got fibre broadband, which I've tested this morning to give me 71Mbps download and 19Mbps upload.

The router is in the living room, and I use homeplugs to get a wired connection into my room.

I'm only get 25Mbps download and still 19Mbps upload in my room using homeplugs, and I want to know which homeplug I should buy to get the same speed as directly out of the router.

I know the speed is partly down to the quality of wiring in my home, and the plugs i've got now are from TP Link, and they are rated for 200mbs i think.

Any suggestions on what plugs I can get to get closer to the maximum speeds seen from the router directly?

Cheers

Hi,

Its simple maths as to why your getting poor speed over the homeplug.

The plugs are rated for 200mbps. Divide this by 8 you get 25Mbps. Which is the speed you are getting on download.

Either a long Ethernet or a 500mbps plug would do the trick nicely. I use a 500mbps plug to push the Internet to my room from downstairs and I get 62.5Mbps download.

Shawrey.

Thanks, that does make sense, however my 20m Ethernet cable has arrived and I'll install it tomorrow.

Cheers

I hope I have!

Was £10 from the rainforest, and had good reviews, so I'll give it a try, if all else fails, I'll get the 500mbs home plug, I can get by on 62Mbps, as its on;y slightly slower than what I'd get if plugged in directly.

200 divided by 8 is 25, but that's not why the OP is getting 25Mbps.

It's quite possible to get 40Mbps+ using AV200 adapters, and 80Mbps+ using AV500/600 adapters.

I get on quite happily on that setup. Got a small 8 Port Netgear Switch on the end of the Home-plug with PS4, AV Receiver and PC all connected. No issues with Ping or anything like that.

This is in my house that's 100 years old and never been re-cabled!

I get 70mb over my powerline adapters (cannot for the life of me remember the make/model of them, but one of them also has a WAP built in to it).
My fiber connection is synced at around 72/18 so these work fine for what I need to connect to the net downstairs.

As for the comment on "quality" ethernet cables - I really hope you didn't go and spend silly money on a cable of that length.
Should have been able to get one around the 50p-60p/m price and that's all you're gonna need.

You still have rubber and cotton insulated mains cabling?

Wouldn't know to be honest.

I know when my Uncle came to do the Kitchen (still live with mum and dad as house and rental prices are ridiculous here) he did say the house would need re-cabling at some point in the near future, some of the cables were a little easier to bend than they should be. He didn't specify what Insulation they had.

I got 20m for £10, and I've already tested yesterday and im getting the speed I should be getting :)

Just need to do some neat cabling work around the house today and i'll all be set!
