Spec me a modern day Freelancer.

As for playing it - It's great in 1080p, I still regularly play it on a couple of servers and there are several complete mods available, including one that has won many (and still wins) game modding awards, apparently... Think it's the Crossfire one.

Mind if I ask what method you use to get it in 1080p on a widescreen monitor?

I had a brief Google last night but there seem to be many different methods, the majority of which involve "hacking" the game code which I'm not entirely comfortable with!

I'll rephrase - It's great playing *on* a 1080p monitor!
I didn't do anything to it, other than find the highest res available. I don't even recall what that was. Set and forget. I was more concerned with getting stuck in to a large battle with a load of top end Capships at the time...!!

I've never actually played fully through the vanilla game - what does the Crossfire mod actually do to that experience?

Regards to the fleabay et al, they're rather damned expensive, think I payed less than that for it when I first got it. I *think* I still have the disc floating around at home somewhere anyway *fingers crossed!*

What does Crossfire add? Can you give a tl;dr from the websites version :p

This thread got me installing Freelancer again. Literally having a blast with it again. Going to complete vanilla and then try that Discovery mod mentioned earlier in the thread.

Looks excellent at 1080p rez. When I get back onto my PC later I'll post the link I followed to get it running at 1080p. Just involves altering a few ini files.

I think I'll try this before Discovery. Looks interesting. This is a quote from a mod site:

highly improved graphics
hundreds of stunning effects
atmospherical music tracks
highly improved AI
dynamic lights
destructable universe
dynamic economy and dynamic universe
thousands of side stories and rumours
quest based storyline
147 high detailed systems
more than 290 new ships
more than 50 custom stations
more than 160 new stations/planets
countless new equipment and commodities
13 new factions including 8 new races
three new sectors
new shaders
planetary worlds
higher render details
DLC (Downloadable Content)
perfect gameplay

Starpoint gemini 2 is a lot of fun and its pretty cheap, main story isnt released yet but there still lots to do and trying to capture and board enemy ships is a lot of fun.

Pretty certain I've got two copies at my parents house in a box somewhere, I'll be visiting them Monday will have a look for you and if I can I'll drop you a trust message :)

I don't believe there's a single thing Crossfire hasn't modded/altered/improved upon. I also think it carries over into their multiplayer server.

Discovery, in all its myriad variants, is not one I'm enthused about, though. I hear too many tales of whining, rule-breaking, Eve-style hacking, heavily unbalanced stats and general haxorz.

Hamburg City is a rather good server, although 24/7 FreeLancer Universe (FLU) is always my favourite - More PvP in 2 hours than Disco offered in 2 months, plus it will allow people to play just fine with or without the FLU mod!

Haxorz...that's enough to put me off Discovery then!

I'm mainly interested in good SP play, so hoping that Crossfire is good in that department.

Yes please!

This is the kink to what worked for me to get 1080P running easily.

Only thing I changed is the first line in camera.ini.

Use fovx = 68.88 to see the top command controls.

Excellent. Cheers.

Managed to acquire a copy. First things first, can you update straight to the 1.4 unoffical patch, or do you have to update via 1.1, 1.2 etc?

Think I'll have another vani play through then have a crack with the Discovery mod.

I'll also be keeping an eye out for Star Citizen and X3 sales.

Have to just add that one title missed out to look out for - No Man's Sky. procedurally generated universe, all the way down to animals on the planets. Not sure on release date.

I didn't know about 1.4 until I read your post. Mine was at 1.0 and I've just copied all the 1.4 files (except for my altered cameras.ini) and it runs fine. Still reads version 1.0 on the title screen though.

You might want to read ttaskmasters post about Discovery, it's put me off :p

Crossfire seems to be good, but I'm going to finish vanilla first.

Wow, that looks good! Just my type of game, will be keeping an eye out for that.
