THREAD BUMP: Max Clifford defense exhibit A: penis size

It simply wouldn't be fair any other way. A shame in this instance, but we can't go changing laws retrospectively.

Ian Duncan smith did when workfare was ruled illegal as the rules were unintelligible. Rather than pay back the 100+ million he illegally withheld from benefits claimants he pushed through a law the retroactively changed the legislation so he would have been right had the law been written correctly in the first place. Good old neoliberal supposed opposition Labour voted the law through.

So you know in theory some people CAN retroactively change the law.

But I digress. Clifford's an unapologetic brute. Hopefully some porridge will give him time to reflect on his actions

Very good. :)

I still don't get why they can't sentence him using the modern guidelines....what does the passing of time have to do with it??

As in if I killed someone now and got caught I'd get 25 years and if the service time rose to 30 years I would still only get 25 years if found out at a later date?

Times change, life expectancy gets higher, people's opinions on certain crimes change etc etc. I think it would be unfair to have a legal system that could adapt with the times.

The sentence stretch at the time would have determined if the person felt the risk of committing the crime was worthy of the punishment.

It would be a tad harsh for example: "alright, chap? That bread you stole in 1983 would have sent you down for 6 months. In 2014 we loves our breads; you're getting 4 years, chap."

8 years isn't a bad amount of time. 4 years in a minimum security facility.
Not like he's going to get his front teeth knocked out or anything.

Best outcome, his career is fully over.

At least he got something. Everyone else so far seems to have dodged the bullet.

This is a point, they said yesterday he was the first convinced under operation yewtree, whcih surprised me, as I thought their had been others, friends of savilles and such like, but perhaps not.
Somewhat worrying given the timescale, the amount of investigation, and the money spent if this is the first result.
