Why is my old Dell optioned 170 so slow. It was used at work with XP and it was not this slow . Now I tried to use XP or Ubuntu on it and it takes ages I've even increased the ram by 256mb

if you're being serious, and you've tried a fresh install, then my guess is the HDD is getting on a bit. Probably IDE right? If you're talking about 256mb of ram that is....

Download the HDTune trial, look at the health and run a scan. If errors or warnings pop up think about investing in a new HDD (if you're serious about using the machine).

Lol no I am serious. The had has been replaced and it won't detect any. I've tried Ubuntu from a external had and it's at a snails speed. The pc use to work ok before, well as fast as you could expect. But now it takes ages to do anything

If it's booting from USB then it will definitely be pretty slow. So no hdd is detected when you plug in a new one? does it appear in the bios at all?

Clean out any dust from the heatsink. That's my first thought, as it can lead to overheating which can force the CPU to throttle itself.

The hdd is detected but the os doesn't pick if up I've tried 3 HDD's either there all faulty or there's some other issue

sounds to me like the key issue is the windows installation disc not finding any of the HDDs. if they show up in the BIOS, then the hardware should be ok (or at least good enough to boot from). What windows installation media are you using? (xp pro/home/x86/x64?)
