I have an interview for a Job in the area on Wednesday.

Can anyone who lives near or around the area tell me what its like? It would be appreciated. Would I have to start using public transport, or is driving ok for the commute to/from work. Don't really have much experience of London, so want some facts before I go the interview just in case I do get offered the job.

I know its not central London, but I'm guessing its still reasonablly expensive. This job would be £27k-£29k, compared to £23k-£25k in Nottingham for a similar role. So I'm guessing in actual left over pay, it's a very similar salary.

Chertsey is quite a way out of London.

Where would you commute from? Chertsey is right on the M25 which links the A3, M3, A320 etc.

It's also not far from Woking, which is on the main line from London with a very fast service.

Well i'd actually have to move to the area and rent for a few months. Then after I was comfortable with the job I would buy a property.

A quick look at rent prices, and for the same price p/m as a 3 bedroom house here, I could only get a room share in the area.

I'd say compared to the Nottingham wage it's pretty low. You're right in the commuter belt of Surrey and it's expensive to live.

Chertsey is your usual suburban town really (or certainly used to be). If you want somewhere a bit bigger then as mentioned Woking is nearby as is Staines.

Welcome to the South East bud, it's hideously expensive down here for that sort of stuff.

Chertsey way I'd be looking at Woking, West Byfleet/Byfleet or Addlestone for rentals. Probably in descending order of cost. Forget Weybridge or Virginia Water, ridiculously expensive.

Hey man,

I live in Ashford, and my girlfriend lives and I work in Woking. I drive through Chertsey, Addlestone, New Haw etc every day on my way to work. Chertsey is a bit weird. It's basically a Sainsburys with some smaller shops around it, though there are quite a few. There's a nice pub there with excellent ale. You can get to Woking from here on the train and then into London on the fast train.

Addlestone isn't great. It's a mildly dodgy area, and I don't think it's much cheaper to live in. Same line as Chertsey, to Woking, I believe.

Woking might be more convenient for you. It's not wonderful either, but it's got lots of shops. It's fairly expensive, though, so not necessarily great considering the wage.

I've basically got 4 interviews all doing effectively the same job except one.

One in Chertsey for ~£28k
One in Nottingham for £24k
One in bolton for ~£21k
Then one in Bristol for ~£35K but unlikely to get this.

In real terms of actual take home pay after essentials (rent/mortgage) the lowest paid ones actually are better. Im excluding the last one as its obviously the best opportunity but i'd say my chances of getting it are almost slim to none.

The surrounding parts of Woking/west byfleet are nice (as i live there currently). Expensive though.

I know, I think I'm gonna still going to go to the interview. At the very least, it's interview experience and you never know, I might enjoy the place that much, that I will want to work there.

Probably be in for a roomshare here. I rented in Weybridge previously but you're looking at >£1k/mo for a decent place; ended up buying in Byfleet where the prices are reasonably and still on a quick line into London. Some parts of Chertsey are OK, but the train into London is slow. Addlestone is a bit of a hole - looked at it when considering renting but given that the train is slow and it's not very nice, it's not all that much cheaper than Weybridge.

The actual job is in Chertsey so I can live further out a bit still I think.

Out of the ones you've listed after Bristol my second choice would be Nottingham. Trying to live in Surrey on under £30k will be depressingly pointless, and Nottingham is a nice location. It's got problems but so has any city.

Nottingham is the one I really want (interview Tuesday) as its a nice place compared to most, salary for the area is decent, its relatively cheap to live there and its close(ish) to family.

I'm sort of throwing the Bristol Job out of the picture, as while I will go to the interview, its almost a certainty I won't get it, so there is no point even considering it, but if I got it, it of course would be the best option.

EDIT: Been programming too much and I keep Camel Casing everything...

What sort of positions are these? I'm either hideously out of touch with not-London salaries or they all seem a bit low for any sort of software development.

Senior ICT Engineer/Technician Roles, I have two years experience as an ICT Technician already, but I actually don't actually graduate from University till June, so all these positions are potential my first job since finishing University.

I was offered a decent paying/career prospects PHP developer role in Leicester where I am based now, which I am due to start on 5th of June, but after thinking it through I don't think its something I could do day in day out every day of my life.

After working on my placement year and during my final year of University as an ICT Technician, I actually enjoy the role as I don't have to do the same thing day in day out on a desk. I am going for Senior Tech roles, where they do everything in house, including bespoke systems, so I can lend my expertise in these areas as well as augment myself.

Also base salary isn't that important as I do make a fair bit of money on the side doing other IT related jobs.

Fair enough. Just try and get the balance right - dealing with computer issues every hour you are sent isn't healthy.

It's more enjoyable (to me) than sitting at the same disk, doing almost exactly the same thing on repeat, especially as the developer roles I would go for would be PHP based, where most jobs will be extremely similar, compared to say a bespoke software developer or front end designer/programmer.
