Bit of a dilema guys, been looking forward to sli'ing my current gigabyte wf gtx 780 with the spec in sig. But, the main issue is that my 4770k is a very bad hot running chip, 72c in games under a k2 cooler with dual 2350 rpm corsair sp fans. The new z97 boards are out soon followed by the new devils canyon haswell cpu's (4970k) which are rumoured to feature a slimmer ihs and better thermal paste on the die therefore better for overclocking. Its unknown if the 4970k will work in current Z87 boards, though i wish it does as i really like my current m6f board. Ill have the money soon for either sli or the new platform, ideally id like another gpu but the thermal issues with my cpu overrides this thought sometimes. Any reccomendations?:)

I'm not up to date with this sort of thing, but would it be possible for you to reapply some paste or some other trick to bring temps down? :)

The new CPU's will work in current Z87 and your Mobo should have got a new bios weeks ago to support them.

Get another 780 and SLI. Your 4.5ghz overclock on the CPU is fine and more than good enough and also the temps of 72c is fine too. You will see no difference on a new platform with a slightly better overclock on the CPU (That is even if the new CPU allows a better overclock than what you have currently), but you will notice better frame rates and gaming performance by adding another 780. Also a 4770K hitting 80c is fine but wouldn't advise it going any higher.

How many fans have you got on the case and do you have spare fan areas you can add more fans ? You can try adding more intake fans if you can to help the CPU cooler get more cool air from outside of the case. Also what fans are you using on the case ? Another thing I would try is re-seat the cooler and try a better TIM if you are not getting evenish temperatures over all the cores. Which TIM (thermal paste) did you use on the K2 and how did you apply it ?

Stress the CPU with something like prime and use Coretemp to watch the core temperatures. Don't worry if there is a 1-5c difference on cores that could be the temperature sensors slightly off or the IHS on the CPU is slightly not level which is common and not a big deal if you applied the TIM correctly and enough of it. Just make sure it does not go over 80c on full load on any core and it's fine really. Also do the same with something like 3D Mark 11 or Vantage and see what the CPU does in them conditions too which will be gaming like conditions. Stick a couple of screenshots here of what you get on full load for prime and 3D Mark.

If you can afford to have to buy a new CPU then delid it, doubt you will kill it if you are careful and then apply Liquid Pro or Ultra to die to IHS and IHS to Heatsink.

I'd definitely sli, you will see no difference with the new boards or chips but get a significant boost from adding another card. your temps are acceptable and 4.5 is a good overclock. As jh30uk says, if you're concerned with your temps you could always delid or even lower your overclock and vcore a bit to get the temps down without seeing any difference in your games.

SLI all the way.

70c in games is a bit high imo. Prime95 would see that higher wouldn't it?

And if you put another gpu in there, it could raise the cpu temp a little as well unless you have very good case cooling. I don't know much about those coolers but even though my 2600k @ 4.5 ghz is cooler than the haswell chips, I only get mid to high 50's while gaming and an average of 67-70c in prime95. That's using a H100i with sp 120 performance fans running 900 rpm idle and 1450 at load.

I would try to get those temps down a bit before adding another card but I also could be wrong.:)

Time for a custom loop ;)

Better with a reference card for sli, you don't want to be dumping more heat in the case, your CPU temps will creep up more.

70s in games is absolutely normal for a haswell i7. Remember tjmax is 105 C. These chips run hotter than sandy and Ivy but they can take it. It wouldn't bother me if I saw 80s in these as they still wouldn't be near thermal throttling.

Like many have said, get another 780. I'd also get some quieter fans. The SP 120s are great performers but loud at high rpms. I'd change to quieter fans and not worry about a 5C temp increase personally.

Good to know. I can recommend the corsair af range for case fans. I have not long had them and this is the coolest and quietest my pc has ever been.:D

IM using af/sp fans in the case and k2 cooler, liquid ultra paste below the cooler and very good airflow into the case. Testing with p95 is a no go as a while back on lower vcore it hit 94c in seconds.

Sli first - then sort the rest if needed
Yep, gonna go with another card first. Ive ran non ref wf 670's before in this board and temps werent too bad. Also that was in a case with no front air intake. No problems like this in the primo, and it can be further improved by removing the front plate and adding another two fans to the hdd bays, got another 4 corsair fans spare for such eventualitys.

Yep, 8 in the case at present and a further 4 spare in a box. Not counting about 20 other various size fans scattered throughout the house. Case fans are all ran via an akasa fc6 controller, managed to get it to fit behind the door by recessing it a bit.

Sweet - you should get some serious airflow in a Enthooooooooo :D
