7970 vs modern cards?

If you're happy with the performance, I'd stay as you are. I'm using a 7970, and apart from one or two mods, there's nothing that I've tried that I haven't been able to run at the settings I desire. Iirc, a GTX780 / R9 290 will be roughly around 20 - 30% faster.

i run my pc through a 46 inch tv which is 1080p max. the rest of the system is an overclocked 4.2ghz i5-3570, 16gb samsung green ram. h100i cooler and an asus sabertooth motherboard

A 7970 is basically equivalent to a 280x, and for 1080p, that should be plenty of power for a while.

What games do you play? Are there any issues with fps at your current settings (e.g. are you having to lower settings to achieve playable fps)?

If so, consider a 280x as mentioned above and crossfire. Most cost-effective option.

I'm currently running 7970 crossfire, will be sticking with these until we are finally out of the 28nm generation.

Agree with everyone else, I would think a 7970 could still work very well with most modern titles.

My low form factor web server has a low prof 1GB 7750 in, granted it only runs on a 22" NEC @ 1650x1050 but can still run Tomb raider on Ultra at an acceptable 30fps, and most other games at high settings / maximum with 40-60fps or so depending on the title.

The 7790 is quite a bit more powerful, so unless you are getting frames dropping on the most demanding titles, then why change?

I'd reckon the 7970's have got at least another year in them before you have to start turning stuff down if you're running at 1080. Does depend on what you consider an acceptable frame rate though. As others have said if you're prepared to go crossfire picking up a 2nd hand 7970 or 280x is a cheap upgrade path if you have the PSU to support it.

How does the 7970 hold up against the latest batch of radeon and nvidia offerings? is it too soon for an upgrade?

They can still hold their own.

For ex. Firestrike
