Surprised there hasn't been a thread on this already. Pretty horrible that this sort of thing still goes on in parts of the world, but then nothing should really surprise me when it comes to the brutality of Islamic extremists.

I think the name Boko Haram means something like "Western Education is Evil", which tells you a lot about these people too.

It's pretty appalling, to top it off it seems the locals who have been protesting at the government to do something about it have had their spokeswoman arrested on the order of the president's wife.

No, right of course the world is always rosy and nothing terrible ever happens.

Appalling, 1 vote here to send in a team seals and put these **** in body bags. Truly beggars belief how far people can twist religion to justify such actions. In fact as a Muslim myself it's dam right scary.

In parts of the world? English girls, and american girls get kidnapped, sold into the sex trade, it happens EVERYWHERE and is pretty awful. But to people that think their way, women (and men but in this case women) are a commodity, something they can simply take and make money off.

Name something, someone somewhere is fully willing to take it and sell it, greed, something that the whole world can proudly get behind together :(

The clash of civilizations across the green belt of Africa. South of Mauritania on the west and south of Somalia in the east and right across that line where Sahara sand meets grass. Look it on google maps and then look at the demographics north and south and how the terrain varies to support populations. Now u know why they are so desperate to move south that not even schoolgirls will get in thier way.

It is a pretty nasty messed up place. Hell look up the janjaweed who kill people based on color as well as religion. The genocide of non arabized darker Africans still happens in Darfur. All supported by Saudi Arabia from what i could gather.

It's sad that they use religion to justify this - while I'm not a big fan of organised religion in general we would be better off investing money in promoting more mainstream (as far as religions in the west are concerned) religious views... Wars/military interventions are expensive. Killing extremists is just treating the symptoms - its the ideologies that need to be replaced.

I must admit I'm fairy uneducated in current affairs of central Africa, but this is a terrible and unacceptable thing for any human to do. We as a global society need to begin to understand and accept each others differences, and strive to ensure our own go no way to harm those outside our belief sphere. One day perhaps, but I don't see it happening within our lifetime :(

While dowie makes a good point, killing extremists in this instance is fully justified - the lives of 230 innocent girls far outweigh the negative throwbacks of the removal of those responsible for this crime. I just cross my fingers for a safe outcome for the girls, regardless of the methods used.

If Boko Haram needs money, they don't have enough to spend on weapons. Buying the girls back will facilitate further bloodshed.

Tough one.
